Motor started to knock - blown oil line-what kind of damage?
#1
Yes, it happened to me. Was riding my sp500, my son was on our new Trailboss 325, 3 weeks old and about 50 miles. He said the motor started to make a knocking sound and cut it off. You guessed it, the oil line blew off. Left about 50 foot trail of oil, motor must be dry. What kind of damage does my motor have. Should I expect a motor rebuild or just HOPE my motor will last it's normal lifetime with new oil lines and fresh oil. Who can I trust? Please give me your opinion. Will contact dealer tomorow.

If the motor was run without oil, it definetly has some damage to it, especially if its knocking. Polaris knows this is a problem and should not give you to much problem with at least putting a new motor in it with the new style oil lines in it. Just remember, they know this is a problem and they can not deny that. Just keep insisting that they replace the motor. Your quad is too new to start its life with a knock to the engine.

I would make sure that they replace this entire engine. Don't let 'em tell you that there was no damage. If it was knocking already, what that tells me is that there is already major rod bearing wear, causing the knock.

I am so sorry to hear that . I have a 325 too , I caught mine leaking oil through the rubber and emitting a light spray . I had no damage, just a mess.
Chopperbill is a Polaris tech in Colorado , I am sure he has had to deal with this too . He would be a good person to ask about what Polaris's procedure will be .
If it were mine , and it locked up , I would be be pressing hard for a new engine . The damage to the rod , cylinder and valvetrain could be really bad .

On a related note, I just installed a Car Quest (Wix) filter at last oil change. I have oil running out from somewhere behind the filter. I can't see where, but I WILL remove it in the presence of the Car Quest shop owner so if there is a problem with the filter, he can see it first hand!

Do you still have your old filter? If you do look at it and make sure the round rubber gasket is still on top of it.
Sometimes when you remove an old filter the round rubber gasket will stick to the block and tear away from the filter.
If you put on a new filter without noticing and removing the old gasket you have a time bomb on your hands.
Just a Thought

A friend of mine in the business recommends using the manufacturer's oil & filter at least until warranty is up. I know they are usually more expensive, but hear me out. If there is any problem with your motor, they can't ever come back & say that it was because of a faulty filter or bad oil. The filter companies will stand behind the filter, but I guess there can be quite a run around until they do.

I wrote about this problem about six weeks ago. Search under the post, TrailBoss blew engine after two hours. Anyway, my buddy bought his son a T'Boss on the way to my friends pig roast. After riding it two hours, it was making a gut wrenching knock. After inspection, I noticed that the oil line had blown off. We put it back on the truck, and two days later I asked my buddy what the dealer had said. He told me that Polaris was replacing the motor. He picked it up a week later, took it riding, and the exact same thing happened after about a half hour on the trails. I haven't heard from him what was gonna happen this time. If I were you, I would demand a new motor, at the least.
