Got my new 06 H1 "very nice"
#1
Well, with all the edgemication I've got from this forum, I decided to buy my first 4x4 quad, the new 06 H1 650!
So.... I've read a ton on here about removing the small shim in the clutch/belt and replacing a spring, but it seems it's always about the V2 650. I know the V2 650 has a lose belt setup vs. the H1 650's tight belt setup, but should I remove the shim and replace the spring as well? or is it not an issue on the H1?
Also.... all my quads have been two strokes, and I know how to break them in, but this is my first four stroke quad, is it the same procedure? or is there a better/safer way to do it?

Check into a EPI clutch kit for the 650 H1. There is a spring in the secondary clutch only on the H1. The belts on the
400,500 and 650 H1 are usually bowstring tight and take 2 men and a strong boy to get off.
As far as break in read the owners manual, or ride at half throttle and under for the first 50 miles(very boring)
then 3/4 throttle and under for the next 50 and change the oil at 100 miles. Then you should be able to go like crazy.
Also vary your throttle position alot in the first 100 miles. Just my 2 cents.

No worries on the belt, all those issues were on the V2. No aftermarket kits available yet for the H1. Might take a good year or so.
For break in, just take it easy the first 100 miles however a few times in there be sure to open it up so your rings can set and streach. Don't do it for too long though. Don't let it idel, and don't ride the same speed very long. Congrats!

everyone is right about the break in procedure, but if you want to try something new go to www.mototuneusa.com. scoll down to 'break in secrets' and click on it. this guy says run it hard after the first few miles. of,course i didnt do it but im curious to see what happens to other peoples bike. lol, good luck and congrats on the new bike.

catterman is absolutely right about not holding it at any speed for more then a couple seconds and i always been told break it in the way you are gonna drive it. i heard if you break it in slow you will actually lose power i dunno bout that but i run mine right to the pin then about every 2 seconds i burp the throttle. i usually do this for about the first 150 to 200 miles. and don't worry bout the belt on this one it isn't like a kawasaki she is 100 percent arctic cat baby. oh and most important of all ENJOY!!!!!!

Thanks for the replies, I have heard to break it in the same way you would ride it, like weez440 & mudslinginfool stated. Some hot rod motor heads out there say the same thing when breaking in a new race engine! They claim, if you baby it during break in, you actually develop a small ring around the top of your cylinder wall from were your piston isn't stretching all the way up, creating a lip, and when you do open it up and get the piston to come all the way up to the top of cylinder, the rings hit this lip, taking them out little by little each time!
As for the varying throttle position, it's the same with two strokes to keep from getting dead spots!
Thanks mudslinginfool for the website, I'll take a look. But it sounds like it's the same break in procedure as it was with a Chevy 350 motor I had built for my hot rod, which ran/runs great!
Thanks again guys for all your help, and wealth of info on this site! It's helped me tremendously in my decision for buying the quad that best soot’s my needs!

i bought a brand new 2003 500 arctic cat a couple years back and i broke it in the way i wanted to ride it and well i told the dealership how fast it would get constantly on top end and how with the right technique i could get it to wheelie they told me well you must have gotten a fast one. well i don't think there is no such thing as a fast one i think it is on how you break it in. and look on the bright side if the motor happens to go you always have warranty to back it up. and yes i do break in my 2-stroke's the same way.
