Default Insuring atv? (theft coverage)

i had my 400 in the back of my cousins truck with just tie downs the other weekend, in his yard, behind his house. pretty safe area. someone tried to steal it, they couldnt even remove a tie down luckily or it would have been gone by the morning.

anyway, that really woke me up to theft, and im wondering if there is a way to insure them for theft coverage? what type of agency will cover it? anyone done similar?

thanks, i was going to post this in the offtopic section, but i didnt see hardly any topics compared to the other forums. so i thought i may get the best response here.

in order to insure it for theft most places are gonna prolly require you to have it in a secure location like a garage or shed not tied down in the back of a pick up truck bed

I have both of mine insured by Erie Insurance (Ohio and PA area). I should note that these are riders on my auto policy, so things function just like something would happen to your car...same deductables, protection, etc. I have heard of others getting atv coverage from Progressive, and (either) State Farm or All State. I know some insurance companies do not insure ATVs and others want to put them as a rider on your house, which was explained to me to be a bad idea. Just to give you a reference, insuring a 5000 dollar ATV should be around 75 - 80 dollars a year.

I also want to add that adding the coverage onto your house is much more expensive than adding to your auto (the bad idea from above).

If someone steals it out of my driveway or something happens on my property I get replacement cost from my homeowners.

However, I have my ATV insured by the same company that does my house and cars. Full coverage, $100 deductable, and better than required amounts. I bought the ATV policy to be legal in NY, besides being smart and a good investment at $135/yr. Now if it rolls of the truck or stolen at the camp its covered. I can't afford to lose $6K.

You sure about that? The way it was explained to me is that if a vehicle or piece of equipment can have it's own insurance then homeowners does not cover it. If your car is in your driveway or garage is it covered by homeowners? No, it's not. Same goes for a quad.

I've got full coverage on all mine through a separate policy with Progressive. Theft, damage, whatever - runs about $75 per year per bike.

My understanding of my homeowners policy is that the ATV is considered equipment, not a vehicle (like it was a riding mower or the like). If it was stolen from a secure area on my property - garage or locked shed - then it would be covered. Since I keep my ATV's in a three sided shed w/o any front door, I doubt that my homeowners would cover it, but the regular ATV policy will.

I believe they consider it equipment only if it's registered as farm equipment. I could be wrong but that's the way it was explained to me from my agent(and good friend). Then again I am in CA!!!

I use this company... ATV Insurance

About the homeowners policy,,, I would specifically check into that, Most do not cover. especially if it is a licensed or registered machine..

Besides.. Your homeowners will not cover your quad when you are out riding it..

Even your auto insurance on your truck will not usually cover your quad even if it is in the back of your pickup. Kinda like a trailer needs its own insurance policy, but is covered with your truck policy when you are towing it..

Before you assume anything, check it out with your insurance agent and make sure of what coverage you got before you need it...

I use the same for my Harley and my quad. I just bought my quad, and my premium for my Harley and my quad is cheaper than just my Harley last year by about 70 bucks.
