Just bought a 01 Banshee last week from the dealer. I havent really been able to get out and ride it yet due to weather.

Question'
Is it normal for a new banhsee to smoke. I crank it up, let it idle-little bit of smoke comes out, give it gas-lot of smoke comes out! I let the engine run for about 5 minutes then just shut if off, get to excited and I might do something stupid like take it down the street past the police department, lol.

Is this normal for new engines? My blaster smoked on startup, but after warmup and riding around it would quit.

Note, I havent been able to ride it yet so I dont know if it will quit once I ride it around and really warm it up.

Thanks in advance.

"get to excited and I might do something stupid like take it down the street past the police department, lol." The oil-fuel mixture is probably mixed a little rich. Just mix the fuel-oil to the correct ratio when fueling up. Congratulations on your new ride...good choice.

It will smoke on initial startup. This is due to oil settling to the bottom of the crankcase. The excessive smoking will (should) stop once the engine has reached operating temp and is revved a few times.

Even running at higher gas/oil ratios a banshee will smoke on initial cold start.

Well it smokes for 2 reasons. 1-Most dealers mix your first tank for you. They mix it nice and rich so that you foul the plugs and will come back and buy more, plus to make sure that you don't blow it up from improper mixture. 2-I don't know if this is spelled right, but the engine is coated with something called cosmolene from the factory. That way internals are lubed while the bike sits waiting to be sold. No rust or dry start up that way. It goes away and quits smoking so much after you get that tank ran out.

Anytime you let a two-stroke sit an idle for minutes at a time it will smoke excessivly. The fuel is not getting burnt off. Then when you rev it up it smokes more because it is burning off the fuel. As the other gentlemen posted, it is also probably mixed a little rich for break in. I would go ahead and run the rich mixture out and then run high grade pump gas mixed @ 32 to 1 with Maxima 927 (just my preference). Good luck with the new shee and maybe Ill see you @ north TeXaS sometime!!! LATER

Thanks for the info everyone.

If I ever get to get out on the weekend I can run out the tank and put a correct mixture in, right now it looks like this weekend is tied up, grr+living in the city doesnt help much either.

The manual shows to run a 24:1 ratio, is this correct, doesnt look like it from yalls posts?

Thanks

Don't go 24:1
I did and after 3 months, th eplugs (that were brand new) have a big layer of deposit...not beautiful. I go 50:1 now. 32:1 is said to be the best.

I ran up to the yamaha dealership and ran thier brains on info.
I bought 4 new plugs, NGK plats, 2 bottles of Yamaha premix R, and some chain oil. I already have some brake fluid/engine oil/and the rest, just need all this for the next time I get to go out.

I also asked them to get me a price quote on Douglas 10 .190 rims (2 rear only) and 2 ITP Holeshot XCT's 20x?x10's. They said they could order them and put them on the quad for 289+tax, that sound good?

I could prolly get them online cheaper.

Thanks for all the replies.

Run the most oil to gas ratio you can without troubles. I run 32:1.

I dont know how well your dealer works with you on cutting you deals, but there is one thing I have learned. Never ever go through a dealer for aftermarket hop ups. They always seem to be more expensive than magazines. I always thumb through a Dirt Wheels and compare the prices. I now usually by all my stuff from K&K ATV. They always have the same price as everyone else, and they always seem to have it in stock. This is just an opinion.
