I had that happen several times to my 2000 foreman ES. Usually it was due to a sticking shifter button. Sometimes I had to use the emergency shifter and rock it back and forth while trying to shift it.

first, it's better to try shifting with the machine actually moving.
second, make sure your clutch is adjusted properly. The ES system has a hard time shifting if the clutch isnt disengaging properly.
also, check the battery. have it load tested, and replace if necessary. the motor needs a lot of amperage to work with full power.
also check around the motor and the ANGLE sensor which is down by the motor, for loose or corroded connections. clean and put dielectric grease on the connectors.

If the tranny wont shift when using the handle, and youre rocking it forward and back...its got internal tranny issues.
What were the circumstances? Any strange noises, just before it happened?

Hi Hondabuster...if it won't shift with the manual shifter, it's internal and not electrical. Very likely just the linkage though. Your next step is to remove (or have a shop do it) the front engine cover and inspect the linkage.

I suppose now that the good weather is gone, and hunting is over, you have more time. Good to hear from you.
As always, youve got the right answer.
