Baja 90cc Cold Weather Performance?
#1
Hi! Do your Baja 90cc ATVs run well in the cold weather. We bought one for my daughter at Christmas and have had a hard time keeping it running in the cold weather. It has been about 32 degrees farenheit here in Indiana. It has a hard time starting. It does not want to idle. It never really gets warmed up enough to open up the choke. She rides it for a minute or so and then it dies and wont restart unless we let it sit for 15 minutes. Needless to say this has not been much fun. Any suggestions?
Thanks,

You can move the needle clip down 1-2 notches to make it run better in the cold. These are very cold natured and the choke needs to be played with. The top of the carb unscrews with the cable in it. You will see a needle in the slide with the cable. You have to disconnect the cable and take the needle out. There is a e clip on the middle slot of the needle. Move the clip down and this will richen the idle to start better and idle better. Make sure you dont lose the clip or it will not run because it holds the needle in the slide. Once you move the clip put the cable back onto the slide and install the slide. You may also need to adjust the air/fuel screw to make it run better in the cold.

I have two Baja 90's. I found that if you don't change the oil in the machines they will run okay then die out. Try this 2manytoys posted this and it worked for the two I have. Also if you are having battery problems go to walmart find an Ever Start 12N94B1 that fits the Baja 90 ATV exactly. The battery is 5 5/16" x 3" x 5 1/2" for around $20. Goog luck
RichSmith,
You should not have to take it to get serviced. You can do the adjustments yourself. Did you change the oil when you bought it? Here are some steps for the carb on these. You must let it sit at idle once running for a bit to make sure the gelpac in the carb floatbowl dissolves. Do not drive until all the adjustments are made and you let it idle for at least 30min. If you do not do this it will clog the jets and it will make it very difficult to tune until all the gel is dissolved.
The mixture screw(pilot screw)had been set-up at the
factory before shipment and should not have to be reset. If necessary, refer to the adjustment as below:
1. Make sure the air cleaner is clean.
2. make sure the choke lever is OFF while running.
3. Warm the engine up for 3-5 minutes.
4. Turn the mixture screw clockwise until fully closed,
then turn the mixture screw 2 full turns out.
5. Adjust the idling screw until the engine idles EASILY.
6. Turn the mixture screw slightly clockwise and
counterclockwise until the highest engine REVs obtained.
7. Adjust the idling screw again until the engine idles
EASILY.
8. Repeat the step of 6 & 7 till getting the best
performance...
*ENGINE IDLES EASILY means:
The engine idling screw must be set correctly to get a
slowest engine idle(1500 rpm - 1600 rpm), but does not
cut out if you press the accelerator quickly.
These are very hard to start and keep running when new but once tuned they run great. You have to make sure you changed the oil in it before you ride. If you have not driven it yet let it sit at idle for about 30-45min after the initial adjustments then let it cool. You may or may not need to make more minor adjustments once started again. The choke is very sensitive. Move it all the way up while starting then turn it over and slowly move it down till it starts. Once running move the choke till you get the highest idle then let run till warm and turn the choke off. Most of the time the choke will not work correctly on the notches set on the lever but will work inbetween the notches.

I live in southern Ohio and Jan. avg temp has only been about 40 degrees....so my old battery has held up well......bike fires right up on full choke......after I screw the throttle nut out all the way...I can take the choke off shortly after....and left it run for 5 to 10 mins.,....my bike does require a good bit of steady throttle to warm up even in warmer weather.....but I have mine now for 9 months....so its well broken in.....I'm gonna get one of those $ 20 batteries for when it gets cold again....my old battery won't hold up and start the bike below 30 degrees.......really my new Pit-bike has been a little more difficult finding what it wants to warm up....still learning its desire combination there....need to get some 10w-40w Oil in it....but it kick starts real easy......we rode alot last week....they are running great !!! *******04 Baja 50cc dirt bike******05 Baja 90cc atv.......06 KC Powersports 70cc PIT-BIKE....Extreme Pitboss

Hi. Thanks to all who replied. I did adjust the mixture screw a bit and was able to get it to keep running, once it fired up. I put the $20 Ever Start battery in and it works a whole lot better than the china battery. My daughter has been riding it a lot during the past 3 or 4 weeks. I taught her how to change the oil too. She is having a blast.
