I just cleaned the carb on an '87 LT 80 we recently bought. It had been running good at idle but would not rev in the higher rpms good without bogging. After putting the carb back on, I left the air filter intake hose off. The motor idles great. I rev the motor and fuel is blowing out through where the intake hose attaches on the front of the carb. The motor bogs down bad when you give it throttle. What are some ideas on why so much fuel is going through? Thanks

 

I'd clean the carb again to make sure it's clean.
I'd prolly check the reed while the carb is off.

 

Yea, I'm going to clean the carb again. After seeing all the funk inside when I cleaned it the first time....Talk about nasty. I had to use my Dremel with a wire brush to get it cleaned up! Since the problem is not in the idle, I should be looking in the main jet area for debris, right? Wrong? What do I look for in the reeds? How do I know if they're good or bad? I'm new to 2 -strokes, so bear with me.

The reed is a metal piece that sometimes crack/break.
As far as the carb, make sure you remove the lil brass seat that the needle sits in. Other than that just a double check that it's clean..

UPDATE: after cleaning the carb thoroughly 3 times, it still was getting too much gas. I also looked at the reeds and they looked fine. Feeling the heat from a 7 year old little girl who couldn't understand why I can fix everything else around here and not her 4 wheeler.....I took the plunge and bought a new carb and reeds. PROBLEM SOLVED! Her faith has been restored and my wallet is a little lighter.

2 weeks pass and I just HAVE to know what's up with the old carb. I take the slide out and guess what? The needle is set on the 5th position. DUH, another lesson learned. I haven't put it back on yet to check it but I would think that was my problem. I will update whenever I get around to it.

I am having simmiler problems I am going to rebiuld the carb , Where should the clip be on the needle , you said it was on the fifth spot is that fifth from the top or the bottom. Also were your reeds bad or what did they look like?

As the needle sits in place, the top groove is #1 and the bottom is #5. Stock setting is #2, however I placed my new carb setting at # 1 since these things seem to run a little rich in stock form. Some people put in smaller main jets as well 87.5 or 90. Stock jet is 92.5 I think. My reeds looked fine. I compared them to the new ones and saw no difference in clearance or anything. But I was on a mission, I was going to fix it!
