Please help!! I have a 2002 Polaris Sportsman 700 and sometimes when you turn the key, the starter motor justs spins and does not engage the engine... then you turn the key off and try again and it might work??? Do you think my starter is going bad??? I put a new battery in it but still does it... Also having vibration problems at low rpm.. This is my first Polaris and I hope this is not common..... Thank you for your time on this!!

Hi,
You know on my Suzuki I have a thing called a "starter clutch" out. It's the same symptom as you described. I don't actually know if the Polaris has this as well, but you could take out your starter and hook it up to your battery while holding the drive gear against a tire or something to find out if it is just worn out and too weak to turn, but it probably isn't your starter motor per se. It's probably whatever mechanism your atv has that engages the starter to the engine that is bad(ie. solonoid or starter clutch). Your starter is still turning, and not clicking, but it isn't turning over the engine. Hope this helps, and if anybody questions the above diagnostic methods...you need to learn yourself somemore okie.

Thanks walnutty,
I'm gonna pull the starter out today and inspect it. After searching, I found out that the bendix gear and starter are sold seperate so I hope I can tell if the gear is just bad or if the whole thing needs replacing. I guess Polaris needed a bigger/better starter for such a big motor..... Anyway, Thanks for the help guys!
