Axle diagnosis
#1
I have a problem with my '03 400. When in 4X4, I can hear a clicking, or snapping sound coming from the right front wheel area. I removed the wheels and checked the ball joints, and they're a little worn, particularly the bottom ones. I also looked at the CV boots, and they are in good shape, with no rips, tears, or abrasions. I'm trying to narrow it down to a ball join, bearing, or CV joint. Any ideas??

If it was a bearing, it should click any time the wheel turned, the same for the CV but some times that just isn't the case. When power is on there is more stress in the bearing and CV, however I would suspect a CV. as the most likely noise maker. The bearing may also be going bad or be bad because water can get in the from the wheel side of the assembly. You have to take it apart to check.

in a car or truck that would be cv shaft also in a car or truck if it were a bearing you would be able to move the tire up and down it will have slop in it but but that also applies to ball joints and tie rods a bearing would be a grinding noise even if you werent in 4wd a ball joint or tie rod would pop while hitting bumps or turning at least in a car or truck anyway
