street legal?

i imagine its not easy in the US. they are highly unstable on pavement. they are titled as a recreational vehicle. i know it would be almost impossible to get an atv through inspection here in IL. i wouldnt get my hopes up.

Here in MS, the law states that you can't drive an "untitled" vehicle on a public road. My Rancher has a title and it lists the atv in the "MC" class....motorcycle. So I should be able to "tag" mine as a motorcycle....it is not listed for "off road use only" on the title.
I may try to buy a tag when I go get the tag for the motorcycle we just bought. Won't hurt to try!

Just a thaught but what if you apply for a builders title on your quad? You'd have to buy an aftermarket frame and show some recepts for your parts but I think that might actually work. I'm busy during the day so I cant check on it but maybe someone here could find out.

I think for the most part the western states are pretty accepting, but not so much east of the Mississippi. Here in Wyoming it's pretty easy. I got mine legal about two weeks after I bought it and I have to tell you it is a heck of a lot of fun riding a grizz on the streets and hightways. Cops have a heck of a time with it. I love it.

If I'm not mistaken Oregon defines motorcycles as having 2 or 3 wheels, so presumably they would have to have all the required equipment as a car... seat belt, dot approved tires, windshield wipers, 2 headlights plus front markers, rear markers and brake lights, plus a bunch of other stuff.
There is also a statute prohibiting operating an ATV on the highway, which might still apply even if you did all that.
Doesn't seem fair, though, considering Oregon allows motorized scooters (the skateboard with a motor kind of things), and in my mind anyway a stock quad is as roadworthy as one of those things.
