no the honda 400ex has a xr 400 motor in it.
but my question is if i put a xr400 motor out of a dirt bike will it mount up in a 400ex frame?

cuz they sell 400ex motors and xr 400 motors. so art they the same for the mounting locations.

i heard of putting 400ex motors in xr400 dirt bikes but i dont no if theirs moding involved.

what has to be dun to get that motor in my 400ex?

 

why in the heck would you even want to do that...? The ex motor has many different things done to it as well as the tranny to make it quad friendly...this swap would make about as much scence as putting an atc110 motor in a raptor frame.

 

I have an old dirtbike magazine somewhere that explains the differences between the two motors and the 400ex motor has been beefed up as far as the case to handle the strain of the quads two wheels vs the dirtbikes one skinny wheel. There is other differences but without the magazine and my old age in dealing with brainlock that's all I can say at this point.

 

why would anyone want to do that change anyway....kinda pointless if you ask me. it would be like swaping a 350 from a thunderbird into a camaro. same basic motor and performance.

 

And, what you going to do about that kick starter whacking the fender every time???

 

all i would have to do is make a kicker extention and cut the finder if it hits the finder bad or i couyld make a shorter kicker.


and reason y i want a new motor is cuz i need a motor for my 400ex and would like a kick start to make it diffrnt than all other 400ex's.

and puting that motor in my quad would b no worse than running a 400ex motor.

 

i dont think its close to how bad of a idea u think it is. why else would a article in a mag have a test on a xr400 with a 400ex motor in?

 

Ok so I have seen alot of people posting questions over the years about this whole 400r 400ex thing. And could not find any info about anything to do it. But have seen alot of info about putting a crf450 in a 400ex. Witch I have done and was a very fun project. And well I'm here to say I took on the xr400 400ex project in one of my other 400ex's and just let me say it was alot easier than the 450 conversion. If anyone has any questions about it feel free to ask. I would love to help so it's 100 times easier for you than it was for me.

 

Yes I'm wondering how to run headlights to fourhweeler now that it has the xr 400r motor it' only pushing about 5 volts to the headlight wires.
