Get in the weight room, ride alot, and build up your endurance by running or other things.

jump rope alot, this helps with your breathing, endurance and helps your arms so you wont get arm pump as bad. Then ride alot too, also a good trick is to eat a couple of bananas an hour before the race and drink lots of water, this will give you energy and keep you from dehydrating.

I race MX and the best training method is to ride.....ride.....ride at a fast pace. You use muscles racing that you wouldn't realize. I still run on a treadmill and lift some weights, that is important and helps out, but it won't be as effective as riding.

And drink lots of fluids! Water, juice, Gatorade, etc..

A lot of your top pros will talk about cycling. During the off-season, riding stationary bikes and spinners at the gym is a great way to build endurance for your cardiovascular system and leg muscles. Doing light weights and lots of reps is also a good way to tone your muscles and stay strong, but weigh less. I have found swimming is also a great exercise to build endurance and help your breathing. And rubber bands or springs to pump up your forearms by simulating lever action is a great way to reduce arm-pump.

But like everyone else also said, you have to ride. Riding is a key ingredient in all this, but you can't rely on riding alone. You must figure out the best balance. Since you plan on racing cross country, I would say riding is a large piece of the puzzle for you. You have to stay sharp so you can fly through the woods dodging trees and cliffs. Good luck.

What is the verdict on caffienated beverages like Red Bull, or on carbonated bevarages? Are they bad, or just "not advised"?

IMO they are good for a "quick fix" and won't help your body any, plus when you come off of them you will be more tired than you normally would. I don't like how they are promoted so much.
