Lectron 46HV installation?
#1
I ordered a lectron 46 hv carb and ported intake which i should have some time next week and before it gets here i have a few questions about the installation.I could ask Randall at HPR and i may have to do that if i run into any problems but since quite a few have been installed by forum members here i figured why not get some more input.I will be losing the air box lid and running a K&N filter and i think that Randall said to retain the snorkels. Are there any other things about the installation that i need to be aware of or is it pretty straightforward.I have installed and changed carbs quite a few times over the years but every situation has its quirks and the Bomb forum seems to have the best advice IMO so any information will be appreciated.

I am sure you have allready checked out the HPR website, they have installation instructions under the carb section. When randall said retain the snorkles I would think he was reffering to the tube the runs from the carb to the air box. Some of us retain that tube but lose the complete air box. Then fab some sort of bracket to hold the air tube. Check out my website for pics on that.

yjacket2001, You understand that the tube you are refering to is pre carb. It fits between the carb and the air filter. Any engine sucktion at idle would put its force on the slide. Behind the slide would be free standing air.
The theory of the tube colapsing is at WOT. If it was not an issue then I am currious why BRP made a more rigid tube for the 2003 and newer models? In the garage, reving the engine does not put anywhere the load on the engine as it would see at a hill climb.

Sandaholic-When i talked to Randall i told him that i ride trails quite a bit and he thought retaining the air box would work well minus the lid.The snorkel tubes are the two ribbed hoses that run on either side of the carb right? Those are the snorkel tubes that i am referring to unless i am mistaken.I ride the dunes almost exclusively but here in Oregon we have some pretty deep water crossings in the spring and even into early summer so the air box is a good idea to at least deflect some of the water. The installation should be pretty easy but it doesnt hurt to get some input especially intelligent input like i have got so far.

Duneittilludie, you are right he must of been referring to the side snorkel tubes that go to you air box. Sometime the term snorkel gets thrown around. If you were to remove the snorkels you would be left with 2 big holes in the air box which would defeat the purpose of keeping the airbox. You can plug the holes but then you create more work for yourself and you would end up with less air flow! If you pull the lid, also pull the gasket off.

loose the airbox and tubes. Put a plug in on the left side of the snorkle tube. Run a pre-filter and be done with it. You won't really need to hold the snorkle in place, it does a pretty good job by itself. Then again if Sandaholic has an easy way to do it.... wouldn't hurt. I used a 1/4 in bit and drilled two holes on each side of the black plastic that rides over the tube area. Then placed a big/huge zip tie around the entire tube to keep it from moving. I did that for about 3 months and then broke a zip tie. Never replaced in and I'm two years down the road with no problems.
I agree with Sandaholic. If you are taking out the big tube.... get rid of the box. You'll find that if you get rid of the box, you'll have to re-attach the rectifier. If you need a good pic, let me know. I'll send it over.

BigDaddy331, so all that is holding your air tube and filter on is the one hose clamp attached to the carb? And the only thing holding the carb on is one hose clamp to the intake! I would think all that bouncing around would work it loose. I would hate to lose my filter or air tube while out at the dunes, sand blast the inside of my engine.
A prefilter in the dunes is almost a must I would think. I have seen K&N filter filled on the top with sand. Also have seen freshly oiled foam filters caked with sand in a matter of minutes. Most prefilters just keep the big stuff off and let the normal filter do its job on the small stuff.
