Hey all, I am thinking about buying a 87 Lt80 for my daughter for 750 and was wandering if there was anything special I should ask the guy or anything I should look for on it. Thanks for the help.

Wiggle the grab-bar side to side. Movement can mean new bushings or a simple bolt tightening.
Look for cracks in the engine cases especially in front of the front sprocket area.
Check the frame on the 2 tubes just in front of the motor and where the 3 frame rails come together under the motor.
For $750 you can't get hurt too bad but understand that the probobility of a bore/piston ($100-125) may be needed. Clutch maintenence is well warranted and may reveal 2 bearings bad ($20 each) and maybe the front clutch hub (variator) may be wore($45). While in there, 6 new rollers ($3-4. each) are in order as yours are prolly flat anyways (I recommend only installing 4 rollers).

Lt80, thanks for the help. It looks real good for an 87, still has the original tires on it. It has been garage kept since he had it and it shows. I checked it over pretty good and the only thing I found was that the starter does not work and the hood has a few small cracks where it attaches at the top. The starter relay clicks and I am getting power to the starter so I will need to rebuild the starter and since I just got done taking an electrical motors class and I was an automotive and industrial electrician since 1997 it should not be that big of a deal. I tried getting the starter out tonight but I just could not get that little booger to wiggle out, any help here would be greatly appreciated. It runs real strong and smokes only a little. It looks to me that the restrictor may still be in the pipe so I am going to look at that this weekend. My daughter and I are going to start adding some accesseries soon and I and going to go thru the clutch and ome of the motor items also. Once again thanks for the help.

 

Lt80 one last thing the pull start does not catch all the time. Any ideas on what might be wrong. Thanks

 

Could be a cpl things.
The pull start may be hanging up. A lil lubrication may help.
Some don't use the cork gasket when installing the pull start. This wears the teeth on the pull start (they are plastic).
4 screws and it comes out for inspection. Should be able to figure this one out easy enough. [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img]
The starter is a booger!! It will wiggle out. Stand the machine on the grab bar. That may help.[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif[/img]

 

Well, I got the starter out and what a pain in the a@@ that was. It would be a lot easier if there was a small notch in the case for it to slide out. After I got it out and apart it was very easy to see the problem, a burnt armature. I guess it could not be the easy thing, a set of brushes. Well off to eBay for a new starter. I have not messed with the pull starter yet as I do not want to completely break the LT, at least we can still use the pull starter for now.
