My sp will go 60 and i bet with a more street oriented tire it would go faster. now you can buy an on/offroad motor bike which is nothing more than a dirt bike with blinkers. and run that on the roads. There is no reason I should not be able to ride my atv to work on the tar roads. as long as it is able to do the legal speed limit there should be no reason whyt not, i understand some places can? i wonder how they got that passed?

rural state.
extremely rural state.
i've never been to maine, but i'd bet population per square mile is less here in south dakota.
i've also had my drivers license since i was 14.
street tires won't make it faster unless you get the same size as your stock tires.
i have spare titan turf tires and they are about 4mph slower than my stock skins.
and yes, you would love it. i absolutely love getting on my quad and going to the grocery store, etc.

The main reason that I would think that atv's aren't street legal is the fact that the offroad tires will not work well on teh road. If you try and turn an atv on a road it will want to flip because most atv's are made to make the inside tire of the turn slip. On pavement this cannot happen. Plus atv's don't have brake lights, or blinkers. They don't turn well because they are not very wide. They are just not very maneuverable. It would also be too easy to get in an accident too. Just my thoughts, but that they not be the real reason.

I'VE HEARD JUST THE OTHER DAY THAT WEST VIRGINIA HAS PASSED A LAW TO ALLOW 4-WHEELERS ON THE ROADS. I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO CONFIRM THIS AS OF YET. BUT I HAVE AN EMAIL TO THE WV STATE POLICE TODAY TO TRY TO CONFIRM.

Hey Guys~
I really couldn't tell you why ATV's cannot be street legal! I think it is because the laws were passed about 15 years ago when 3-wheelers were the only thing available. Everybody knows 3-wheelers are not nearly as stable as an ATV. About making an ATV road ready...Polaris ATV's come with standard brake lights, blinkers and a horn can easily be added, extended A-arms and widened rear axle are available, and street tires could be put on the quad! That would make the quad corner jsut as well as some SUV's. I ride a Yamaha TW200 on/offroad bike...Ever seen one? The back tire on that bike is a good 6 inches wide and as nobby as any atv tire! I have no problem keeping up with SUV's in the corners. Of course on a bike, I can lean into the corner. I think state governments need to relook at the laws and maybe reconsider them. If Gore gets elected, we might need the roads to ride on because we won't be able to go on any public land!

I want a TW200 Yamaha that seems like a great bike, we have about a million even for population, not to many and i live in far north Maine very tiny population wise.
but they could make an atv tire that was more fit for the road. you are right most of the hate atv laws were made when 3 wheelers were around, they are much safer now, i used to flip my 225DX at least a couple time a week, i have not flipped a 4 wheeler in 10 years. I could see not using them on highways and things like that, but i should be able to drive to the store for a soda. I think i need to start something here in maine to see what kind of response I get among atvers and if they want to make them street legal. see if it is worth trying to get a referendum or something like that.

Hey xepathfinder~

You're right about that TW200...it is a great bike! There are not many of them around and I was lucky enough to find mine in a town about 150 miles away! I'd say go ahead with that referendum. Or maybe start a petition to have the law changed. You might be surprised with the number of perople that support you!
