Default 660 headers

Hey guys, i havent been on here for quite a while since i was askin ?'s bout the 660 not shiftin and all.But since then i have gotten all the shifting probs and clutch and whatnot taken care of and its all good. But, i would like no know, if my headers turn red and i have freeze and oil, and no air pockets in the freeze system, then is it normal for the headers to get that hot?The overheat light is not coming on while it is doing that, but i am wondering if there is something that is making it do that. Also, btw. What jet woud this be and what would i have to do as in enlarge and make it smaller, when i go to accelerate sometimes it hesitates and then hits the powerband and while i am riding it feels like a slight loss of power in upper rpms.Could this have anything to to with cam timing?I would think it would but it revs good when in neutral. My biggest concern right now is the headers.

Thanks

~Mike~

Well Mike, it was a little hard to understand your post. But it sounds to me like you have an overheating problem. I assume "freeze" means coolant, or antifreeze. Be careful what you use in your bike. Antifreeze designed for use in cars will not work as well in aluminum ATV radiators, and can lead to rusting, as well as not withstanding the increased temperatures of a single-cylinder, comparatively larger-stroke engine.

You may need a new water pump. For around $60 at your local Yamaha Dealer (Motorcycle Recyclers in Ravenna, or State8) you can pick up the entire assembly, shaft, propeller, casing and all. All you will have to do is unbolt the old water pump, reuse or replace the c-clip and buy a new seal for in between the pump and the engine case, and you're good to go.

To do this, you will have to drain all your coolant. And, with the coolant drained, pour some water into the radiator and see how it drains from the water pump. If there are any blockages, you will be able to tell by the flow. And then the problem might simply be in one of your hoses.

But before you do all this, inspect your hoses and radiator to see if there are any leaks. Also check the engine to see if any coolant is leaking out of it. Most of the time coolant will be leaking out of the tiny weep hole in the bottom of your water pump. If you are getting coolant out of this hole dripping onto your frame or running down the engine, then for sure your water pump is bad.

You mentioned jetting. Yes, improper, or lean jetting, will lead to overheating and a glowing red exhaust pipe. If you're jetting is lean and your bike is popping at the top of the powerband, then it will begin to overheat. If you're jetting is off, which it sounds like it is, then a safe bet would be to increase your mains a size or two to get the engine more fuel. But I am willing to bet it is your water pump. I tried everything, including adjusting my jetting and replacing my thermostat before replacing my water pump. After replacing the pump, I have had no problems since.

I also replaced my radiator with a larger capacity PWR radiator, and I now run only Engine Ice rather than regular coolant. I also added a pro design line cooler as well. My temps are considerably lower.

If you find no leaking coolant coming from the weep hole or anywhere else, then it is probably your jetting. Try going up a size or two. Good luck. By the way, I'm in Streetsboro. Where in Mogadore do you ride?

Oh wow, streetsboro?I live in suffield, it is right on the border of mogadore and brimfield.Thats who suffield didnt wrestle at a meet this year....streetsboro...Yea, the bike does backfire a considerable amount, i will take off the carbs here soon and be sure to clean it and i will buy a jet kit along with a hotcam.Im sure it cant be the waterpump because i just had it apart and the hoses are fine and it drained fine and refilled fine.I run 50/50 coolant in my bike.it loses power in the powerband and when in reverse it will cut out quite a bit.I would think it would be jetting.

Quite normal for headers to glow red, especially if you are in a confined area and the bike is at idle for a period of time.
