i just scored an 87 lt500r. after i got it running i noticed it was leaking coolant from under the water pump housing. on the clutch cover just behind the water pump cover, there is a tiny hole . the hole was gooped up with jb weld . i poked the jb weld out, and i'm wondering , is that hole supposed to be open, or is there some kind of plug that goes in it?

 

It should be the wheep hole, With anti-free coming out that means your seal is bad.

 

that hole is there for when your waterpump seal goes bad, it gives the coolant a place to go when the seal goes bad..... all you gotta do is replace your waterump

 

is it the seal around the water impeller? or the seal on the cover that is leaking?

 

the seal thats around the impeller shaft, the seal comes out as one big unit. your ganna have to take the clutch cover off

 

Be sure your water pump shaft bearing is tight or else it will still leak

 

make sure you check your oil too.....my 90 lt250r motor had a screw in the weephole and it backed the water up into the motor and seized all my stuff....rusted gears and all internal had rebuild the whole motor and was nothing but headaches ....so make sure ya check the oil....

 

also the screw holding the impeller on is left handed thread....easy fix though just pull your clutch cover and taker in the garage drink 6 pack and youll be ready put oil back in her.

 

i drank the six pack just readin' the tips thanx, i do have the book, and i've done the research. now a gasket set , and a carefull reassembly! Ialready drained all the fluid. got it for a grand and already rode it for 30 min. until the head gasket and water pump started leaking. i'm having a hard time tryin' to find an intake/ reed cage gasket.
