Default Yamaha 660 Raptor VS. Yamaha 700 Raptor

I am looking at buying a Raptor and I have read some bad things on this message board about the 700's. I was also wondering if there are any bugs with the EFI that need to be worked out, that may be better in the 2007's. I'm looking for some opinions on what to buy? The 660 or 700? And Why.

The new 700 is going to be easier starting because of the EFI, better throttle response, and if you make any simple mods, pipes, filter, etc..., you wont have to rejet. But if anything goes wrong with the EFI, repairs will cost alot more. Although, nothing is cheap with atv's.
Ridewise, the 700 is wider with the YZF style suspension and a longer swingarm. But the 700 runs about 800$ more than the older 660.
The speed isn't much faster on the 700. I have an 05 660, and they dont beat me by much.
I would wait a couple of years to buy a new EFI model because I'm sure they're going to have bugs to work out.

IMO, the 700 in every way possible is better then the old 660. I had the 660 and was quit use to it. We now have the 700 and its so much better its not even funny. Yes, the above is true, that topspeed, they are probably pretty close, but the 700 gets there MUCH MUCH faster. We raced my almost stock (cammod, jetting, and p-shooter removed) yfz against the bone stock 700, and they would trade wins. If the yfz didnt get it out of the hole, it was all over, cause the 700 keeps pulling and pulling. When we would race stock yfz's against stock and piped raptor 660's, the yfz would easily take the win in a 300ft drag.
The handling is like night and day. Its by NO means a yfz, but the new 700 has AWESOME handling compared to the old 660. The suspension is better, the a-arms, swingarm.....ect.ect.... I dont know why anyone would even look at a 660 anymore, unless your short on cash.
By big dilema is YFZ or 700. I cant decide, with so many goods and bads on both!

I bought one of, if not the first Raptor 700, sold in America. I got it even before the fuel pump recall was done. It was one of the few that escaped the warehouses before Yamaha called them back to replace the fuel pumps. I had to have mine done at the dealership. Anyway, I heard all the "your gonna get screwed for buying the new model year" and "if the fuel pumps are already bad what else is going to go wrong?" thing from everyone, and that was a risk I took. But I can assure you, this is not like the original Raptor release year. I have well over 150 hours on mine so far without any problems at all, except for a couple minor incidents involving trees and loose gravel that were my fault. Not that you cant buy any bike on the market and get a dudd every now and then, it happens, with anything. If you can afford the extra bucks, get the 700, it's head and shoulders better stock than the stock 660. Not that the 660 is a bad bike, it's a great machine, but I think you would like the 700 much better. It's far more versatile, and unless your looking for something to race on the track, it's the best bike you can get for the money. And the EFI isn't nearly as complicated as people think, and it's a lot easier to tune. Come On,.... join the family........one of us......one of us.........one of us..........LOL. Have fun, and be safe.

There is nothing wrong with the EFI itself. The way it was originally marketed(when I bought mine in september)was that the EFI would compensate for modifications like intake and exhaust. Due to the fact that there is no O2 sensor in the exhaust to give feedback to the computer......its impossible. An aftermarket programmer must be installed to modify the fuel delivery.

The subframe is weak. Other than that, I have no complaints about mine, and would not even consider a 660. 660 is narrower, taller, you have to jet 2 carbs and play with the choke.

I dont forsee any changes for the 07 year.

Oh, most definately! A piped 660 can be a very bad dude. It should take a stock 700. If it can't, I suggest you reconfigure your jetting and maybe even a different pipe. Out of my two I'd say my 700 is faster but not by much. My 660 ran badass but my 700 is just a little badder (if thats a word)................
