A friend of mine has a 2002 DS50, he bought it used and we were wondering if it has any speed or rev limiters built in, that can be removed to make it go a little better.

Restrictor in the carb to keep the slide from going all the way up. Check by taking off the intake boot to the carb to look at slide. Restrictor in the front clutch/variator to limit top speed. Looks like a steel wedding band between front halves keeping them from moving all the way closer together. They also can be helped out a bunch by engine,clutch,pipe,20mm carb. Let me know if you need any pics of the clutch restrictor. PM or post email address I still have pics I think.

Fastestdad,
I just bought a 2002 DS50 for my kid and it's gutless. Goes alright on flat surafce even with me on it (210 lbs). It does seem to bog down after hitting higher revs until you release the throttle and then it picks back up. The speed is not so much the issue as the lack of ability to climb hills. We have steep hills that I ride on and my kid can't even climb a speed bump with this thing. If I could just get it to climb hills, I'd be thrilled. I pulled the clutch cover and see the variator but I'm not sure about the spacer in there. If you have the pics you mentioned, that would be great if you could email them. I can put my foot in front of the rear tire and hit the throttle full and it won't even move, so it's driving me nuts. Let me know if you could spare a few minutes to help. Thanks =)

paintballbanshee,
sure. i'm new to these little quads so any suggested vendors would be great...I need to make this thing climb hills with dad or it's more useless than a bicycle.

OK, update. Check exhaust system, no washers there. Checked carb and the sleeve is allowed to move fully open, so no restrictor there. Throttle restrictor screw is fully removed. Air intake ube did have the washer. Washer is now removed. Checked variator halves and they can fully touch on shaft and no ring size bushing was found. The machine still does not go up hills. I can run the machine without the clutch cover on and watch the variator halves and the belt remains very low in pair and never moves up higher (halves never come very close) even though there is nothing stoppping them from coming together. I assume at this point I'm just not getting enough rpms to throw them together and drive the belt up higher. I'm assuming it has the stock CDI on it which is probably restricting it. I read something on this forum about a spark arrestor, where do I find that?
