I have narrowed my seach for a new ATV to these two ATV's. Can anyone offer me any good purchasing advise? The Polaris is a 2005 Demo for $5,000 and the Yamaha is a new 2006 for $5,600. I just sold a Kawasaki 300 that I had for 5 years and only had about 250 miles on so I'm a very low user. I use it to drag a beach and move a little snow.

I dont know about the Polaris but I LOVE my Kodiak. It does everything I want it to except give me the winning lottery numbers!

 

why did you sell your 300? no 4x4?

250 miles in 5 years it doesn't matter what you get really

both will move snow and ride on a sandy beach. The Yammy might be a bit more fun on the beach though

 

I sold the 300 to my father. He wanted a inexpensive ATV to use around a race track in Iowa. It had 4 X 4 and was a good machine for me. I just wanted to get a larger machine as the 300 lacked a little power and got stuck in the sand once in a while.

I would go with the Reliable Kodiak.

 

MY SUGGESTION IS TO GO RIDE THEM BOTH, SEE WHICH ONE YOU LIKE THE BEST, MY GUESE IS THAT YOU'LL FIND THE KODIAK A BETTER MACHINE. GOOD LUCK

 

I had the same decision to make about a month ago. The Polaris is a great quad but I am SO glad I picked the Kodiak 450. I have many friends that own both models. I was able to ride both models in many types of terrain and get feed back on each models reliability. The deciding factors for me were smaller foot print/size, true locker, weight and reliability. The two main reasons I picked the Kodiak came down to size and reliability. The Kodiak seem to have as much power as the Polaris but in a smaller size. This helped because many of the trails in my area are mountain trails that are very tight and very steep. I have plenty of HP to get up the hills and a small foot print to fit on the trails. The second issue was the reliability factor. Many of the Polaris owners I spoke to had major complaints about reliability. Some of the owners I spoke with stated their machine was in the shop for the same issue multiple times. Yamaha is known for quality. In my opinion they are on step down from a Honda in reliability. With these factors I made my decision on the Kodiak. I have only had it about a month or so but I am completely impressed with its abilities and quality. I am not discounting the Polaris. It is a strong machine that does have some benefit over the Kodiak. The Polaris is much heavier which makes it feel like it is more stable on the trail. The Polaris does have additional HP. The HP didn’t translate to feeling faster due to its heavier weight. It will all come down to what you want the machine for. If you want it for trail riding I would say its an easy decision on the Kodiak. If you want it for hunting and work the decision might be a tougher one…

 

thonez makes another good point. the width of the polaris , especially with the big tires. mt grizzly is 1 1/2 inches wider than the kodiak, but still fits between the wheel wells of my pick up, my buddies polaris tires would not fit through his wheel wells. most atv trails especially in tight woods are made by 4ft wide and under atv,s the polaris rider is going to constantly be watching his wheels, and the tires are hard, they pop off the rims if they get crushed against something.
