Z400 mod question
#1
I have a bone stock '03 Z400. It time to start modding it. Within a couple of months, I'm going to get a Wiseco 440 big bore kit and Stage 2 hotcams. I'm a newbie when it comes to stuff like this, so I have a couple of questions. 1) What kind of exhaust is best to use? I was kind of leaning towards buying a Alba complete kit ( complete exhaust, K&N, pro flow, jets, outerwear). Or should I go with something else? 2) Is the wiseco big bore kit a good kit? I've never heard any comments about it. Or should I go with something else? I still want it to be reliable but have some good power gains. 3) Will I need to buy a bigger carb. to handle the new mods or can I get away with using some bigger jets?
With all my mods, what kind of bikes would I be able to beat? Maybe a stock YFZ?
Any feedback will be very helpful. If there is anything else I might need to know, please tell me.

1) Whatever pipe you go with make sure you get the full system since you are going all out. I had a Pro Circuit exhaust on my Z400, and it really helped out the bottom end.
2) I used a Wiseco 440 kit in my old 400ex and I never had any problems
3) I would think with all of the mods you are going for, you might as well and go with a bigger carb, perhaps a FCR. But yes, you should be able to get away with a stock carb.
I would think you will be able to beat stock 450's if you have it tuned correctly.

I've just been down the road you're talking about... If you're not really concerned with shelling out $$$ and want performance and reliability.... read on.....
- Athena 434
- port/polish EVERYTHING in that new cylinder(make sure you take them the header to match also)
- Stage two hotcams
- Dynatek ign system
- 40-41 mil FCR flat slide carb
- Yoshi FULL system (don't be cheap and only get the pipe)
- Hinson clutch system
- you may want/need to change the sprokets also
I've done the above with the exception of the carb (still looking on a deal for one).

what kind of riding are you planning on doing? if i was going 440 i'd go with a 12:1 piston, you may have to go 50/50 on race gas. ive heard people say the athena 434 kit will out run a 440. plus the 434 is a bolt on. i think you kind find it for$600. i'd go with the athene 434,440 before id go alba. ive just heard bad things about albe ,my own .02. good luck

I have one thing to say about modding. once you start you wont stop. If I were you I would do the suspension
first. I was told once that what good is power if you dont have the suspension to handle it.
then I would go for the motor work. if you really want power send the motor to yoshimura and have the 450kit installed
it costs around $1500/2000. and like what was said before get the full exhaust not a slip on

Yes get aftermarket front shocks and a full exhaust system (they're all pretty good) with a pro flow kit for the air filter and see how you like it. You will be surprised at the improvement. This is gonna cost you around $1000 so this is all you might need to do for now unless you have an unlimited supply of money. Good luck.

I mostly agree with everyone else.
You dont need to go with a big bore to be fast. My Z runs with good running piped yfz's with mods listed in my sig.
Cams and carb gave my biggest gains, but they wont work good without intake and exhaust mods.
