Default Honda Trx450 valve question

My son has a 6 month old Honda '05 trx450 with 6 or 7 weekends at Glamis. plus a few trail miles on it, and he was telling tonight that the valves were getting noisey and needed to be adjusted. He said he has been quoted $400 for the job, and they need to be done once a year. I said that was nuts, get a manual and do it yourself. He said it could be difficult because of the ohc. I was thinking about trading my Banshee for an '06, but I am not going to put 400 bucks into it every year.

What do you guys think, is it that tough of a job for the semi-mechanically inclined?

Thanks!

Not bad at all really. They are shim-under-bucket design and the whole job can be done in an hour if you have some shims handy. I suggest buying the manual and follow it. The money you save doing it yourself the first time will pay for the manual. You can get the shims at Honda or you can invest in a shim kit from Rocky Mountain that has all sizes of shims. Not sure what diameter they are buy they are the small ones, very common.

Check your adjustment often on this motor!

If this is your first valve adjustment, then you are way late! You should adjust them for the first time right after the motor is broken in.

It is my son's quad, who is a young adult and is on his own. I thought he took it in for service after it was broken in.

Thanks for the info,
