Default 1978 Yamaha DT175 Enduro Motorcycle Problem!!!!!

Yah i got a 1978 Yamaha DT175 Enduro Motorcycle and it sat in a garage for about ten years, and now i finally got it running and it will not go over like 30 mph. I can shift like up to 6th gear and it just spits and sputters and will not go past 30mph. Can someone tell me whats going on please.

Default 1978 Yamaha DT175 Enduro Motorcycle Problem!!!!!

Is it totally stock? Air filter and air box lid installed?
I would think its a carb problem. Either the air filter is pluuged up, or the carb jets are plugged up. Clean them both, disassembling and removing the jets, and cleaning all the passageways in the carb.

Welcome to the forum 04BlasterRider, I would have to agree with hondabuster. Clean the carb with carb cleaner and compressed air.

Default 1978 Yamaha DT175 Enduro Motorcycle Problem!!!!!

I had a 1983 yamaha dt80 years ago and that happened to me. Due to the fact that the gas tank is metal and rusts this plugs up the carb. I would pull it apart and clean the particles out. Make sure the gas lines are in good shape because I had to replace all mine because they would dry out and crack.

yeah...the bottom of the carb prolly has a floatbowl that needs unscrewed and dumped....you will see rust in the gas....maybe a of inline fuel filter could come in handy

Hi there,
I had some issues with this as well. But I couldn't get it to run correctly at all.
The solution is to completely disassemble the carburetor to just the body. Clean and de-varnish the carburetor parts including all the jets. My local shop suggested Yamalube Combustion Chamber Cleaner. That stuff works really well. It's a foaming cleaner that after the foam dissolves turns into a liquid.
Foam up all the components of the carburetor and let them all soak in the liquid overnight. Then clean it out and reassemble.
You'll need to get all new gaskets and o-rings but it's worth the effort.

dude, great advise but you do realize that was posted over 6 years ago? While we're on the subject of the DT what does DT stand for anyway? My buddy had one back in 1992 and we called it the Dump Truck cause that's what it looked like. At the time I had a 1979 RM125 that we called the Grasshopper cause the shape of the gastank and the faded yellow looked like one lol.
