buying best/cheapest Polaris 400 scrambler piston?
#1
Hey all, I am rebuilding a 400 scrambler I just bought, Was wondering what the least expensive and best quality piston to buy is. It has been piped, reeds, clutch kit, and is geared. I dont like wisecos, There is stock but they are like 85 with no rings, there is a nemura?? brand that is coated with tephlon and a few other similar brands like that. The nemura seems like a good piston at 60 bucks. Could someone let me know there thoughts asap. I want to get it running very soon, Also what brand does polaris use for pistons as I like stock pistons. Thanks, Brian

The reason why I said that i didnt want to use wisecos is because it worked awsome until the guy wanted to try out a different piston, Had a wiseco put it and didnt get much time out of the before it ruined the piston, head, and cylinder.

Hmmm. He may have gotten a bum piston...I don't know all the details but it could have been other things that weren't done right. I can see maybe burning up a piston if he didn't jet it right or break it in properly but the head and cylinder too?

correct, actually near the intake port it went straight throw to the aluminum. Cylinder didnt cost me much, Im not sure exactly what happened to make it do that. So your saying wiseco, Now dont you have to give the wheeler a really good warm up with those or you have a much larger chance of cold seizing it? Let me know, Thanks, Brian

Yeah I've seen those nemura pistons and I personally would put one of those in any of my machines...they may work just fine for ya but I've been around long enough to see some really bad problems arise when people don't use Wiseco pistons in a 400 motor...just ask anyone on this site that has any work done to their 400 and they will tell you the same thing. I would be doing you a disservice if I told you to use anything but a Wiseco piston...especially if you have any mods done.

I break mine in like this...after the piston is installed I usually go thru 4 heat cylces of 10 minutes then let it cool down for 10 -15 minutes. I do that around 4 times and usually don't baby it at all after that. I let mine warm up for a few minutes and that's about all. Now on my sons LT80 I usually let it warm up for a good 10 minutes. I think it matters more on the bike and how the piston is fitted to the cylinder. Break them in really fat too...they may run like crap for a couple of tanks but it sure makes the break in a lot better...jet it as rich as you can on the pilot(without it runnign like a total dog) and then jet for the needle and main after it's broke in good.
