Default Viper 90 snorkle idea?

Have an 06 Viper 90 4 stroke and love it except for water getting in to airbox. Quad hasn't been submerged but you know kids, love to splash across streams. Does anyone have any experience adding some sort of snorkle tube to maybe extend the air intake a little higher?

Raider,

I don't have any suggestions but I was interested in your impressions of the 06 90 Viper... I considering one for my son to replace his 50 Suzuki...

Thanks,

Hibrass

HAve you looked at the Unison Desert Cat 90? It is a great machine. It is just as good as any other name brand quad out. There is alot of mods for them and alot of kids race them. You will spend less on this machine and get the same quality and performance. Nothing wrong with the viperjust a little high on price.

At the nationals, I see some using ducting. Looks like it's 6" (diameter). They run it up under the hood somewhere.

I've heard adding a snorkel messes up the jetting on a two stroke so maybe not that many people have tried it.Since your running a 4 stroke it probably won't affect it too much so I'd go ahead and try it..How do you like the dual A-arm suspension(assuming your bike had it). Also how is the 4 stroke for power?

I love the Viper 90. Bought it to replace a Scrambler 50. Had near disaster due to weak brakes on the 50 and son had outgrown it. FIRST priority was hydraulic brakes and the Vipers are stoppers deluxe. Easy for him pull and locks up the rear tires easily. Also bought it for the reverse. After riding for a couple of years, saw no problem with him learning to back up. Added daytime running lights so we wouldn't have to watch time so close to get back to camp before dark. It is in the shop under warranty right though, supposedly the shift motor would shift back to neutral and the quad doesn't like to be started in gear. Neutral is another advantage. Has always started well-rarely use the choke. Engine is pretty peppy - not sure on the top speed but does sound like there is some extra power that could be uncorked. Faster enough for my 7 year old though. Has good ground clearance but bought 2" spaces to widen the stance hopefully to prevent tipping. Finish, quality, and workmanship seems great. Price is not much more than I paid for our Scrambler 3 years ago. Would highly recommend one. Just need to find a way to better protect the airbox from water.

Raider,

Sounds like a pretty nice quad. Could you give some more detail on the problem that has the bike in the shop?

RaiderV,

If the E-Ton 4 stroke factory air box is like the E-Ton 2 stroke factory air box (which is like my son's factory Pred-90 air box), you may want to cut its 1" factory air box snorkel pipe approx 4" long. Then, slip a 1 1/4" ID rubber hose over this 4" snorkel pipe, and and run the long rubber hose pipe to the top center of the hood. Ensure there's no kinks in this rubber hose. Check the color of its spark plug before and after this change. If its color is different, then minor jetting might be required. Minor meaning its C-Clip may only need to be adjusted - due to air flow drag of inside this long rubber hose.

4 stroke are NOT as sensitive to jetting as 2 strokes. To me, 2 strokes are way to sensitive to any air filter change. Therefore, adding a long rubber hose to the existing factory air box snorkle pipe shouldn't be a problem. Especially since it sounds like your young rider drives under 3/4 throttle.

Hope this helps...

Dealer thought the tranny problem was in the shift motor. Haven't talked to him since I dropped it off. Viper has forward, neutral, and reverse. You shift gears with a switch on the handlebar. Quad would only run for a few seconds and then die. Gassed it after starting with the switch in neutral and it moved so I know it was in gear. It does have a safety feature that will kill the motor if you shift into gear with too high rpm's. Since I couldn't get it to shift back to neutral, I figured it was a shifting problem. Still in warranty so not too worried. Other than a wet airbox periodically, this is the only problem since February and it gets ridden probably 5 days a week. Will post again when I talk to the dealer.

To seal the factory air box, assembly it and apply lots of external (out door) silicone (clear color) to the outside joints. This is often used as well.
