Default Need help with brand new YFZ450

I just bought a brand new 06 YFZ 450.
Thats the good part!..

Now the Bad!..
I got the bike the delivered to my house but I was not present to recieve it. The dealer just dropped it off, now I get home 30 mins after they drop the bike and here I go to get it start it to hear that sweet sound.

I try turning the bike on, but the bike shuts off after like 4 seconds, I turn it back on and it does the same thing. Now I decided to hold the throttle down just a little bit to keep the engine runnning, eventually I let go of the throttle. The bike shuts off after like 1 min, I do the same proccess and It does it again. Now I smell something burning and is the front part of the exhaust that is connected to the engine. And guess what? That pipe was red like lava. Now Im freaking out. I let it cool down and tried it again. It did it again. I checked the coolant it was straight.

Can anyone tell me what it could be.

This is my first brand new bike and first 4 stroke bike.

Please help with tips.

Hm, thats an interesting question you pose...

Did you check to make sure she has fuel, if not, did you put fuel in it? Does she have oil in it? What it sounds like to me is you kind of bypassed some safety designed ti keep your motor from blowing sky high. Your pipe should never been red hot.

What does the burning smell actually smell like, burning what? Metal, Rubber, etc?

It have a full tank of fuel.
I checked the oil and it has oil too.
Its not that the pipe that is burning. Its the other end where it connects to the engine. Its burning and it turns red like when you heat up steel. The pipe dont smell any burn.

You think I might need to get the jet settings changed or the coolant is not flowing through?

Another thing. The first time I turn the bike on, a little bit of oil leaked from one of the bolts.

vem i'd call the dealer the minute they opened, and have them come and pick it up take it back to the shop and fix or replace it with a new one; and have them call you before they bring it or another new one to you home !!!!!! Infact if at all possible i would go to the dealership before the Tec./Machanic touched the quad, so i could see with my own eyes what they check on it first ! I'm a GOD fearing Christian man of 53 yrs old, and i can't even think what i'd say if they tried to put any blame on your part, even if i was a Marine drill Sargent ! That sound's like some shady deal them just dropping off a new atv and leaving it there with you not there to recieve it. Did you get a free test ride on this quad at the dealership before you started to deal on the purchase? I bought a 06' Arctic Cat 400 FIS Auto TRV Utility with the suzuki belt driven clutch sytem (Belt drive is something i would not have ever thought ) i'd ever have, if i hadn't known the dealer since she was 4 yrs old and a motocross championship trophy winner at the age of 4....! She even built the can am engine and set up the bike she won her first trophy, and by the age of 15 yrs old she running the machine shop her family owned her name is Tammy Joe Kirk, she rode the motocross ciruit untill she finished high school racing in between ; and drove nascar for a few yrs. with Maiden Form was her sponser ! She is the only Arctic Cat Dealership in my home town of Dalton Ga. Dealership Kirk's Cycle

She told me that since she had started selling the 400 auto's in 2001 not one bke has ever been brought back with belt/clutch problem's; and she gave to me in writing that if i had any problem with any part of the quad she'd give me a new one or refund my moneyback no question's asked ! And i was still unsure untill she let me take the one i bought for a test ride on the back lot for over 30 minutes doing donut's and the work's ! I then watched the the big guy who work's behind the counter load it on my pick-up before i signed the paperwork, she gave me a new helmet and a $100.00 custom Arctic Cat cover before i left for home. I had the choice of the helmet and cat cover or a new winch, but since i already had a new 2000lb winch still in box at home; i went for the helmet and cover! If they're a good dependible dealership they want give you a hassle over fixing or replacing it with a new bike, demand not ask for a test ride on the quad you buy, before and after delivery ! This is not something you should even have to ask of them. Don't curss them out',or bad mouth them by any mean's, but be firm about this, and if they start trying to lay any blame on you; just smile and say i'll see you in court ! This is something that will get their attention and an appolgy for your toubles, a calmly mention of lawyers and court will get you the respect you deserve. ................GOD Bless You.......................williebee

Ah huh, yeah I'd give the dealer a call. Sounds like the idle is set to low. As for the burning smell and the glowing pipe. The pipe glows on all those yfz 450's. And the new smell will burn off after the first few times you ride it.

Click here this is a link to a thread regarding the glowing pipe on the yfz.
You could take your spark plug out and take a look at it, that will tell you if you are running lean.

Sorry for the first post on your question about your quad, enFORCER may be right about the idle mixture or idle adjustment setting being to low, but what i was getting at when you asked if fuel/jetting might need resetting is that if you try something complcated as rejetting you could void your warranttee if you worked on it yourself without first contacting your dealer first ! and yes if it was after sundown when you tried starting your bike the exhaust will glo red my cat did that and had the burning ordor the first few miles of riding that's natural but the engine should've been setup to run before they delivered your quad, look at your owers manual it should be under the seat with all the saftey checks to perform before starting the quad.................willieebee
