i like the 400ex format alot., but you will be very pleased with the r. its lighter, handles better, flies better, hill climbs better, way more exiting to ride. they really dont have any glaring weaknesses at all. just look over the usual stuff bearings, breaks, motor noises, tranny feel, and such.the 86 is alittle longer and has a steel swinger and seems more plentiful.the only thing your losing is that pansy electric start!!! lol

Thoroughly check the waterpump cover/right crankcase cover. Older Honda's have a really bad problem with corrosion here. If there is even a drip from the weep hole underneath it's probably shot. Also look for black oil spooge where the exahaust meets the cylinder and again at the silencer. If it's oily or thick it will need a new crankcase oil seal on the right side. Both are very easy to repair, but a new cover is around $200. Also, don't take anyone's word that their 2 stroke has a "new top end". If the owner will let you, remove the exhaust and take a look through the port at the piston to get an idea of what shape it's in. If he won't, it probably means he's lying about the new piston. Good luck!

hey there , i would go with the 250r of course !! like all two stroke it just a lttle more maintience but really all worth it, they ride great, handle great and have excellent power for short runs and longs runs, and man can they fly, there 20 years old bike and still are the best bike out there even the 450 are giving them a good run for there money !!! but 250r are still the best !!! the only things with the r that i have problems with are for long runs the gas runs out fast so it is good to get a dessert tank , oh i would go with a 88 or 89 trx ,and man you can get so many aftermarket parts for them to look GREAT !!!
