Default 05 Kodiak 450 Fuel Problems

My Kodiak has been cutting out and backfiring after it warms up. It will only go around 20mph and begins to cut out. I'm assuming it could be something blocking a jet or something else. I would like to drop the bowl, but it looks difficult getting it off. Any Ideas???

check your gas cap hose first... they suck a lot of air thru those, and debris likes to get sucked in as well... Also, take apart the gas cap and make sure nothing is in there too... (I've had numerous things get sucked up the tube... and/or get caught in the cap. This is why I put a stinger on my cap.)

I have found that the Kodiak 450 engine gets a tight intake valve. Try adjusting that and see if it doesn't fix your problems.

mine had to be adjusted at 900 miles

I had the same problem with mine and after tearing the fuel system apart and cleaning the carb it started working again. However, during that time I never filled the tank up all the way and it ran great. I could get back to top speed very easily and had no problems. Last weekend I filled the tank up with fresh gas and guesss what it started happening again. I would get up to 50 mph and you could feel the lack of power. Then as I came to a stop and started up and mashed the throttle it would bog down and backfire.

So I checked the breather hose, no obstructions there. Could there be a design flaw with it being too small?

How do you check the intake valve? Excuse my in experience with this.

Thanks guys I'm really starting to doubt my Yamaha. My buddies on thier Polaris's are really giving me a hard time with this deal.

That is odd... Sounds like a dealer question to me... unless someone else on here has experienced that before... Have you tried running a full tank, but on the reserve setting just to see if it does the same thing? I can't help but wonder if it's a possible float issue...

How many miles/hrs do you have on it? Have you ever had the valves adjusted?

Sounds like what mine did. It hits 20 and the rev limiter would kick in. I took it to the shop and found out a stick had unpluged an electrical connection on the left side near the front differental. Mine would hit up to 20 mph fine and then bog and cut out. check this connection. Look inside between the tire and front differental. You"ll see a group of black wires attached to the side of the body, follow them till you see where they plug into another set of wires. Hope this helps.

Well I checked the connections like you said and they appear to be securely connected. There was some crap lodged against them, but nothing out of the ordinary.

I tried the full and reserve setting with no difference in reaction. I can start her up take off at a slow start , but when I mash the throttle it just goes bbbbllllllllllllll and wont increase speed and will back fire if I continue.

I have about 77 hrs on it and just over 600 miles. I had it in last winter for its first service and again this spring for a recall.

I have never had the valves adjusted , is this something that should be done on a regualr basis?

After more explanation of what your saying, it almost sounds like the rev limiter is kicking in...
There's an overide button on the handle bar. Push that when it's "BBBBllling." and see it it makes a differnce.

it's probably not a valve adjustment issue.. but be aware that it will get tight and will need adjustment. I know a friend's who's Kodiak wouldn't run at higher elevations till he tracked it down to that tight intake valve.

I would disconnect and reconnect that wiring the guy mentioned above and see if any corrosion has taken place inside.

if you can't readlily track this down..You might want to take to the Dealer it might be a situation they have seen before.

I hope you DO NOT have the Diff lock engauged?
