So I have a 2003 Suzuki Vinson Auto and I when i hit the start button it makes a grinding sound as if the starter wasnt engaging/disengaging...so I purchased a new starter for it jumping the gun. Now I inspected the gears that the starter meshes up to and they were in prime condition. However it appears that the gear it needs to mesh with is actually the engager/disengager and its not working properly because with the new starter it makes the same sound as the old one. Any suggestions?

yea umm...just took off front cover on pull start side...believe it or not theres a hole that holes a bushing or something in it that basically folded out and then it went ahead and tore a huge chunk out of my crank case also where the starter something or another needs to be mounted to. I knew i was going to get the 581 kit but christ sakes a whole new freaking crankcase? Does anyone know if i can buy just a single side or do i need to change teh whole freaking thing?

try Ronnies atv. you can order online. I had to buy half a crank shaft so you might find half the case there. Good luck with the 581 kit, mine will be together very soon!

Was it your bendix or flywheel that was bad? iIm having the same problem - I bought the starter, but need some instruction or diagrams on how to remove the bendix and/or flywheel/ Do you have those?

look at my pictures...remove the pawl start assembly and then dismantle the cover that holds the water pump on etc. Make sure you have a drain pan to collect the oil and whatnot from the machine. My starter was NOT defective...my machines decided to shear chunks of metal off the crankcase and outer cover that contains the starter stuff.
