Default Good deal on 1997 250 Recon yesterday.

It was my lucky day yesterday, a neighbor got a new '06 Honda and was selling his old '97 Recon in his front yard, It was there for two days with a for sale sign on it. I was the first person to stop by and ask what he wanted and when he told me $200 I about feel over. He bought it new in 1997 and changed the oil regularly and used it on the farm. It needs a new seat, rear tires, the clutch slips... but it starts and runs fine. He told me sometimes it dies when it gets hot, like a vapor lock. So first thing I did when I got home was remove the cap and try to blow through the gas vent tube and cap, it was clogged up so I got some steel wire and cleaned out the path, made sure I could blow through the cap, put it back on and drove it around the farm for over an hour... runs great. Its a little rough, but not to bad for the money.

I even got the title, owners manual, tool kit and extra key.

Here are some pics.

for 200 dollars I need a deal like this.

I like the utilitarian plastic these early models have over the new models.

Good deal! Did he keep up on the valve adjustments? What about rear end oil changes?

I get the title today Saturday as he had to get it out of a safety deposit box. I'll ask him about the valve adj or Honda service, I know he has taken it in for some brake work once to a dealer, as he told me that. The top engine is very quite, the darn clutch is making some clanking noise when you first shift to first, and slips under hard acceleration in 3rd 4th, etc. barely noticable. I tried the mentioned adjustment, but did not help much, I bet it's a nine year old clutch.

I found and bought a new seat on eBay lastnight for $25, has one small hole I can repair easier and cheaper that fixing or covering the piece of crap seat it currently has one it. It is for a 2002, looks the same so I am hoping it fits?

I guess I will drain the rear end today and use the same lube/oil I use in my foreman rear end. I need to crack open the owners manual for the proper capacity and weight. Yeah its needs a some TLC, but my kid has not outgrown his Eton 90R yet, so I have a few years. I think I am going to ride it around in the mean time to keep it fresh instead of letting it sit for 2 years : )

Yeah I noticed that also, he said that was the fourth set of rear tires they put on, I did'nt have the heart to tell him they were on backwards : ) He said it was serviced twice for valve adjustments and fluid change, over none years and that he changed the oil a few times a year with Honda oil. He also told me he was strict with his boys, no hot-rodding or water holes or driving in the creeks.

I tried to adjust the clutch, not much more I can do, so I think I might have to replace it. I guess I need to search for a service manual on eBay next.
