To Buy Or Not To Buy 450R ??
#1
Hey guys...
I'm new to the forum & have been quadding for about a year. My dealer still has my dream quad, 05 450R ( actually, still has 8 of them ) & are blowin them out for around $5300. I'm really considering it. I figure this could be the last quad I ever get as the power is right & is awesome. Tell me what you think. I'm on the smaller side ( 5'4" and about 140 lbs ). I ride mostly Plaster City & Ocotillo here in So Cal. I'm in the process of selling my Blaster & will only have to finance about $3000. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated... I love Hondas & probably should have bought one in the beginning, but you live & you learn I guess.
Thanx

As long as you can afford it, buy it. Night and day difference in power and handling over the Blaster. After a year of riding, you can handle a 450R, just keep your wits about you. My wife was riding my YFZ for a bit today, and while I am not going to publish her weight on the web, it is significantly less than yours.

Thanx bro. I'm really thinkin' about it. Got my blaster up on e'bay, craigslist, & backpage.com. We'll see how it goes. I love my blaster, but after i sat & thought about all i wanted to do with it, it was like 2 more grand. If I only have to finance 3 grand for the 450R & keep it for many years to come without out growing it, then i'm down. Only live once, you know... Thanx for your help...

Maybe the best desert quad of all time! Multi time Baja winner. This machine dominates desert racing.......man, what else do you need to know? Absolutely perfect for where we ride!
I widened mine a little, by putting on ITP Baja rims with iRazr tires (ITP Holeshot XC's are great too). Rims are wider and have a wider offset than stock, and the tires are wider as well. Makes the quad +3" wider, and more stable (the stock tires are terrible!). Mine corners like it is on rails!
It is geared tall, so you will want to gear down if you ever do any tight trail riding. I have gone down 1 tooth in the front on mine. I give up some top end speed, but I like a torquey bottom end.
Engine will hop up a whole lot, with an HRC kit and an aftermarket muffler.
The 05 is a kick starter (which I prefer). If you get one, let us know and we will tell you what the drill is for easy starting, hot or cold.
It will need frequent oil changes (http://www.thumperfaq.com/oil.htm), and you will want to be sure to keep the valves adjusted. I highly recommend Maxima Extra ester synthetic oil (http://www.maximausa.com/products/4s...synthextra.asp), in both the transmission and engine sides of this machine.

Thanx for the insight. I'm really leaning towards it. I take it you ride Plaster/Ocotillo as well. I love it there. Got my blaster for sale all over, so we shall see. I still love my baby blast, but for the price & the payments, it's almost a no brainer. Easily affordable for a quad i'll keep forever. Blaster is a kick start as well, & i'm a fan of those too.
Thanx

I was doing some edits when you posted, so read my post again. I started out on a Blaster, many years ago. Tons of fun machine, but not quite up to the big time.
We ride high altitude in the summer (local mountains, Inyo's, Sierra), and all over the high and low deserts in the cool months. See you at the top of Blowsand Hill!

Thanx for the recommendations, much appreciated. I'm more of an Amsoil guy on oil. Run it in my Honda Element, my Harley, as well as my blaster & if purchased, will probably do the same in the 450R. How hard are the valve jobs on the 450R. That was one thing I didn't really take into consideration, actually, forgot all about it...

Amsoil isn't bad, but the esters have superior chemistry (I'm a biochemist). Be sure you use the motorcycle specific formulations, that are API SG/JASO MA in the transmission. In the engine side, you can run a slick JASO MB oil.

Here is a reference that outlines the superiority of an Ester Synthetic oil, to a PAO synthetic (Amsoil is a PAO). "You need to run an ester of some sort for maximum protection." http://www.scooterhelp.com/genmainta...kcase.oil.html
