Default Hi everyone,newbie needs help

Hi everybody, new guy here, and I need some help.
I just bought a 1994 timberwolf last week, and finally had the chance today to go through all the fluids, tune-up,etc. Heres the thing, I went to go to the parts store to get more oil, I come back, and apparently my brother decided to try to start the thing, with the dipstick just sitting there in the crankcase.
The dipstick/oil plug got wrapped up in what looks like the connecting rod?
I managed to fish it out after putting a screwdriver in there to help bend the dipstick back around.
I am wondering, do I even want to start this thing or is it toast? If it runs should I expect it to die soon? I cut the steel off the dipstick and screwed in the plug, to keep the crankcase covered, but I'm really worried now.

Thanks in advance for any advice, and remember never to leave your key in your atv

Default Hi everyone,newbie needs help

I think more than likely itll be fine.
Did it turn over when he started it?
How many times did he try to start it?
Why the hell didnt he ask permission?
If it is damaged he should be paying for it.

Good job on a prevention maintanance, most people just buy it then pretend like the person before them just put fresh fluids in it.

He said "it made a pop", and he noticed the oil covering him, I imagine the pop was the dipstick getting molested. Apparently it didn't start at that point, and he walked away from it.
He said he only tried it the first time, and knew there was "a problem".

Do you think I need to change the oil again? In case there are any filings in the oil from this? I just got finished cleaning the filter, screens, etc. The original oil in it smelled like gas, and there were leaves, grass, etc in the airbox.

The petcock doesn't work, I think, which I'm guessing could cause gas to flowdown into the crankcase over time, also.

It should be fine, the gears are a lot harder than the dipstick. Since he just stopped after he heard the problem it didnt gring the gears up too bad. And yes definitly change the oil again. Make him buy u a few quarts

If you are really worried, you can take the clutch side cover off (the one the dipsitck was in) and clean everything off inside. Like everyone else said, the dipstick itself would take a beating before any of the gears would break or chip. Sometimes you can get away with reusing the gasket.. Its always good to have a new one on hand though.
