Hey,
Armadillo makes a rack for atv's called the out 'N' back rack that is MADE to hold a gas can, and it even comes with one...

This is the rack for my quad, as you can see it is safe or they would not be allowed to sell this.
Hope this helps.

Cabela's sells a carrier that mounts on the rear of the rear rack of the quad. Holds a five gallon gas can or 16 quart cooler. I have two racks on my quad to carry extra fuel and/or food.

Um, I beg to differ with you guys, I took a can on a ride once and it popped open all over my quad, so unless you get one of those packs made specifically for quads, your parents are right, don't do it.

just get a higher quality gas can and you'll be fine. the main thing to remember is to set the can on the ground when filling.
EVERYBODY here has to carry spare gas, one way or the other. i use the Kolpin flat fuel can, and it has never leaked a drop. i have used different cans with no problem, other than some of the cheaper cans will seep a little after a while. these of course should not be used.

They're not worried about the gas can between your legs? (gas tank)
Great, now I'm paranoid.
