Hey, get it patented and make some bucou bucks!! Unless you got the idea from somewhere else, in which you MIGHT not want to do that...

Necessity, the mother of invention.

Mentioning the battery hold down made me think of using a large marine battery box (cheap at wally world) and putting a 1 gal can of gas inside that. Battery box could be useful for storing many things for riding and they have a secure top.

We have to carry extra gas on our trips or risk not getting home! Have used 2 gal and 1 gal non vented plastic cans and I recently bought a gas pack 3.2 gal red plastic can made by Kolpin ($79) that is flat and fills up the front rack of my yamaha grizzly. You can stack those up and then put other stuff on top and bungee it all down, works fine. They also make a white plastic version intended for carrying water. Just make sure the lids are on tight whatever can you take along.

Make sure the hooks on the bungees don't rub the cans while riding, can cause a leak, turn them outward or pad them with a towel or something or wrap cord all the way around and hook together on top where they won't dig in.

Having them with you can be more dangerous, but riding carefully you should have no problem.
