please help, stator not putting out voltage
#1
my problem is my quad runs good when the battery has power, and the battery slowly dies over the course of a couple of weeks. it depends on how much i ride, the more i ride, the faster the battery dies. the battery is good/new and i tested the voltage through the regulator plug{unplugged of course}and the yellow wires all read 0 volts.i dont know why but this is where im at.should i also replace the rectifier/regulator?im waiting on an email responce from rickystator, so does anyone know where i can get these two things replaced for cheap? regulators seam to be cheap, but couldn't find any info on where to go or what to do about the stator. btw, the fuses are all ok, there doesn't seem to be any shorts/loose connections. any and all help is welcome. im broke and so is my quad.this is my first thread!!!OH YEAH, my qwad is an04 ds 650 regular edition.THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH..

I have a stator from a 02 ds you can have but you need to pick it up. JUST PM ME

Yea to me it sounds like the battery is giving all its power its just like if an alternator goes bad the car will draw all its power for the accesories off the battery so its pretty much the same case...I would get the stator and if it is fine then don't worry about the rectifier.

hmm maybe the magneto could be bad that would problably be my only other guess besides a short of either the ground wire or one of the other wires that is drawing down the battery...I was going to say that the battery could be having a parasitic draw which will draw some of the juice out of the battery but it doesn't seem to be that way...darn I am stumped unless you have left something on and the battery doesn't have much juice in it...try charging the battery and see if that makes a difference...Also I don't know if I would trust the dealer 100% how did they test them

i think they did an ohm test. a guy at alba told me that for the stator thats a good test but hes not so sure for the regulator. im taking it to the dealer right now, dont know what else to do, but set the thing on fire, or sell it. I AM SOOOOO FRUSTRATED. thanks for all responses.

HELLO WELCOME TO THE SITE AND WELCOMETO MY HELL!!!!
i have an 04 X with similiar if not the same problem 2yrs and still cant find it
what i did so far so you know..my bike will also last a few wks and then be dead depnding how much i ride, then it progress's into dying in the middle of rides..so hang on for the fun
3 new batteries
2 reg/rec
1 starter with extra ground
3 times to dealer 600 bucks..cant find problem
as we speak its in garage cuase i am scared to ride it
the latest thing i havent tried yet is someone said run a ground strap from battery to sub frame and then to main frame cause there is a short some where and this will help it....do a search under my name and you will see all the crap i have been threw with this...hopefully you dont have this issue ....good luck

every time this discussion comes up one of the things that gets recommended is to verify integrity of ground all the way from battery to motor, due to the potential of powder coating causing an insulation between the bolted together chasis parts, but it seldom gets done. I've seen people post over and over again about all the stuff they keep trying and keep replacing, all the while ignoring this simple, albeit slightly time consuming, verification of good ground conductivity.
I am not directing this to anybody specific in this thread, simply saying pay attention and do this if you are reading this and having the problem because it may very well be all that is wrong and easily corrected.
The battery ground is bolted to frame, and the motor is bolted to frame, and if the motor is isolated from frame conductivity with powder coating then the charging system is not getting good ground so it is not doing its job and you are running on battery rather than stator and the battery is depleting and not charging. Rather than pull the motor and sand all the connection points and try to obtain good ground that way, simply run a fairly heavy gauge ground wire or braided grounding strap from battery negative to the motor and securely bolt it in place to the bare metal of the motor itself. be sure to use the right tool to solidly and firmly crimp round hole terminal ends to this wire for good connection. then charge the battery cause the stator needs field coil juice from the battery to make juice of its own to charge with, then go ride and see what the long haul shows. if the problem is gone and stays gone problem solved, but if the problem still exists then at least you know that further troubleshooting really is necesary and you ruled out this easy and free possiblity. many bikes have had this ground problem, particularly newer models with the powder coated frames, and many have been cured in this manner. Just ask AZSAND.

got my pos 650 (ds) back from dealer today, they say the regulator and statr are bad. they say the stator is putting out too much power. they say it was around 19 at idle. when i would test it i would get 0. so..... that leads me to believe that it is my ground. so, i will post back after i ground my battery to my engine, everyone, please keap your fingers crossed and pray for me..... just kidding, but i do hope it works. thanks to all who replied.

i still get no power after grounding battery to motor. BUT when i was testing the yellow wires i would poke the positive lead of the voltmeter throgh the insulation into the wire. its a bare metal plug so im holding onto the baremetal positive lead with my bare hand. i have the neg in my right hand. when i hold the neg terminal and touch the negative side with my bare hand THEN the voltmeter starts to read between 7-10 volts ac. WHY does the voltmeter only show voltage when im helping it ground with my body. is there somewhere that the stator is somehow being isolated, and not directly connected to the system, thus not allowimg a complete circuit? i know the stator needs good field power, so if it is grounded, is it possible that it is somehow not getting power from the positive side of the battery? i dont know if what i said even makes sense but, would love to hear all of your thoghts. thanks guys
