Default 1983 LT125 (like alt 125) Valve tick??

Just bought lt125. Fixed ignition (bad exciter coil), now I would like to know what is the "cause" of valve tick noise. Set gap to .003-.005". Same at all speeds/loads. when plug is out, pulled through, it sounds like it might be intake valve or spring? The service manual says could be broken sprin? have others seen this? Also puffs some smoke intermittantly. Thanks Mark in Ohio

No cable, cold compression about 140 psi. Performance decent, smokes a bit at times (more when hotter) BUT TICKS LIKE A SEWING MACHINE....

have you checked to see if the springs are broke? The reason I asked about the decompression cable is because if you have one and you get it too tight it will tick... How do your push rods look? I would just take the cover off if you can and see if anything looks wrong...
