Default can-am800 vs sportsman800

Understand that I am new to the atv world besides a friends 660 Grizzley ride through a few mountain trips which i loved.

I am loking to buy within two weeks a 650-800
I test drove the the 2006 can-am 800 on Tuesday and the Sportman 800 today. My thoughts were that the CA had a smoother ride and the engine and drivetrain seemed smoother.
The sportsman seemed a little rougher ride and the engine seemed to let out more fumes. I came back to the office smelling like
i had been mowing the yard behind a 15 year old Murry Mower. I told the salesman I thought the CA had a smoother ride and he thought I was crazy.

Am I crazy or is this common have some truth to it.
Any suggestions on other atv I should check out.

Before buying the Outty 800, I also test drove a Polaris 800. The ride on the Polaris is a tad...very little bit better. Just a touch smoother I.M.O....other than that...there isnt anything about the Polaris that can even come close to the Bomb. What did it for me is when I found out that the Polaris 800...isn't really a 800...its a 760cc bike. The weight was also an issue, over 800 lbs. Get the Outty...you won't be sorry.

The Polaris has one thing going for it and that's a smooth and comfy ride, as does the Rincon. I would say the Outy and Po are about the same ride, but the Outy is better at everything else, stability, handling, power, reliability, and hills.

The polaris will try to come up on you on a steep hill, cause in all wheel drive, it is in rwd until the rears lose traction, spin and then the fronts lock in. Going downhill, the Polaris is quite an adventure while the Outy will cause you to hit the throttle intermittently cause it's too slow going. The Polaris will scare the heck out of you going down a really steep hill, the Outy will bore the heck out of you, too slow in 4wd lo.

In scatting through the woods, the Outy is almost stuck to the trail until you want to slide the turns, really fun to ride and safe to ride, plus of course it's faster and has more power.

On the Outy though, you will need to buy a set of skids first thing. The spar beam underneath is very much at risk to rocks. Also the ground clearance is not 12", more like 9"-10" without anyone sitting on it. I am disgusted with BRP for those two things. If you can live with those 2 things, the Outy would have to be your choice. It's sure as heck my choice, and I've ridden a lot of different brand quads.

Edit: BTW, you get a no cost 36 month warranty with the Outy, and if you buy fairly soon, you can take advantage of an extra 6 months = 42 months. When I find out the website to apply for the 6 months I'll post it for you.

Quad magazine has a common problem article this month listing common problems reported by dealer mechanics on various brands. The mechanics said there have been so many problems with the Sportsman 800 transmissions that many feel Polaris should issue a recall.

The Polaris is well over 100 lbs heavier then the Outlander.

You get a true 800cc engine in the Outlander vs 760 in the Polaris, the 800 is also a HO engine, 8 valves, I believe the Polaris is only 4 valves. I'm also not too sure about those Liberty engines in the Polaris, they have not been around a fraction of the time the Rotax have been.

Comfort/handling vs my Rincon? Myself and two other people so far absolutely believe the Outlander is more comfortable, handling isn't even a comparison.

The one thing I kept raving about on my first weekend of riding was just how nimble the Outlander is for a big bore, sport/utility. It doesn't feel like a big beast.

In my opinion there is no comparision. I used to have a 2004 sportsman 700 before my Outty 800 and the Outty is better in every way. The ride is way better, it rides and handles like a sport quad and its faster than most sport quads, thats a fact.

BTW, the second fastest utility made is the Outlander 650

It's a personal preference thing but I didn't like the way you sit on the Polaris. To me you seem to sit more upright and on top of it. The Outlander felt more like you sat a bit lower and you felt a bit more connected to the machine. When you sat down and got into riding position your butt and leg position just seemed to connect you to the machine if that makes any sense. I didn't feel that way with the Polaris. You were just sorta sitting on top of the machine. I just didn't feel connected or comfortable on it. Don't get me wrong though. The Polaris had a very nice cushy ride.

That sort of thing varies by person and limb length and body type and whatnot but that was the vibe I got from the machines.

Hey man, I just bought a 2007 800 XT Camo yesterday with the 3 year warranty. The sales rep mentioned that there is a site to go to or something where we can get an extra 6 months but I can't find anything. Can you help me? I understand that this is something I have to sign up for online.

Thanks!

I have a 800 max xt outty and really like it so much I can't stop riding it I got it last DEC 21 and looked at it today and it has 3600 mi on it .At 3600 mi the Polaris's that I have had were falling a part. The outty has had few problems I Like not having to work on my ATV before I ride so if you want a slow ATV that you have to work on get the popo but if you want ti ride get the outty.
