Use the search feature on here and you will find thousands of answers on oil!!! It all depends on what you want to run in it but at least make sure it is a motorcycle/ATV type oil. Supposedly you can't run regular automotive oil in them because of the fact that it circulates throught the transmission as well as the engine. Just to be on the safe side I always just spend the $3 a quart and buy the Honda oil that is recommended in the owner's manual (I think it is the GN-4 10W-40). That way no one can say I used the wrong oil!!!

Most automotive oil has moly in it which is bad for your clutch. The best oil is labeled JASO MA, which has no additives which could cause a clutch to slip.
Oil is probably the biggest debate on the board. I use a synthetic oil specific for 4 strokes and JASO MA certified. Why, I want my engine to last a long time and being air cooled, the synthetic lowers engine temps a little. Important in 100 degree summers. Synthetic oil clings to engine parts better resulting in less wear over time. Just my opinion.

I use synthetic oil in all my atv's. If you want to pay the Honda dealer what they want for the Honda oil then go ahead. But for the money, you can't beat Shell Rotella synthetic that's avaialble almost anywhere.
I myself spend the money for Amsoil 0W-40 that's rated JASO-MA for atv's and snowmobiles. No more than we ride, I can get by with once a year oil changes.
Like I have posted elsewhere, the synthetic oil stopped the Yamaha Bruin from smoking on start-up.
