I am not sure that it needs tightened, but something is wrong with it. I have another post detailing that on this forum.

Do you put shims on the drive clutch or the driven clutch?
And, are shims the same thing as spacers?

firstthing is to see if tghe belt is junk or not. im assuming your having either bogging or shifting problems. the belt should be setting up in the driven clutch to the top or a little above. the shims are what you would take out of the driven clutch to make it tighter. not knowing whatthe problem is i have no idear if its a bad belt or broken spring.

I don't think it is a junk belt as I just bought the belt yesterday. I am going to take the cover off tomorrow to see if I can see anything obvious.

Besides taking out shims from the driven clutch to tighten the belt, is there any thing else that I should be looking for?

I put the new belt on yesterday after the prior one was broken. It is the same belt number that was on it before and it is the belt that the Polaris parts manual recommends.

What are the symptoms? there should be some slack in the belt when it is running at idle or not running. once you give it gas the primary clutch, which is mounted on the crankshaft will start to squeeze the belt causing it to ride up from the bottom of the clutch to the top. At the same time the secondary will start to open up or get wider causing the belt to ride lower in the clutch. Why do you think you need more tension on the belt when not moving or the engine is off?
