Default What size castle nut?

Hey guys, I lost my castle nut for my rear wheel over the weekend b/c my cotter pin fell out. All the Yamaha dealers are sold out of this axle castle nut. I'm trying to find one in a hardware store that would fit.

What size socket head fits the axle nut? I need to get new tools, mine only go to 18mm. I think it's bigger than that. Any ideas on where else I can get this axle castle nut besides the Yamaha dealer?

Thanks in advance!

i just always use a big wrench to put that on... it's kind of hard to beleive that they're sold out... have them order one then.. you'll only have to wait like 2 days for it

Hey Speedy,

A big wrench would kind of difficult to tighten or loosen the nut being recessed into the steel rim wouldn't it? Would you happen to know the mm size of the socket head to use on that axle castle nut?

Both dealers I called said it would take at least 5 days to get more. I need to get one by Friday so I can go on this ride Saturday.

thanks...

Hi there,
1.Remove wheel from offending hub.
2.Do same for wheel left on bike.
3.Remove split-pin & castle nut.
4.See if nut fits other end of axle stub, to establish thread direction: some axles have left thead too.
5.If nut fits, take nut as sample to any good hardware store.
6.Good idea to use thread lock on splines and threads...
7.Don't forget to fit new split-pin.
8.Enjoy riding again!

Hope this was of help.

Hey thanks a lot Ben. I didn't think that the axle nut could possibly be different. I really don't think so but I'll give it a try.

I just hope that I can find a matching castle nut at a hardware store.

How is it in S. Africa? What do you ride downthere?

Hi there!
Pleasure to have been of help.
Try a local bolt & nut distributor.
All's really great here, weather is choice...As it always is.
I'm riding a trick '97 Blaster...Truth be known, I'm not really sure what's been done to it! Pipe and all those bells & whistles.
Goes very well tho. Mostly social riding, I'm not too keen on speed.
Just sold my Jordan / Joyner ATV....Biggest load of crap known to mankind...Check out my thread in UTILITY ATV and in DRIVETRAIN, SUSPENTION & TYRES.
Just stick with reputable dealers and brands...
Boating more my game, racing type rubberducks.
Have a good one.
Benjamin.
