I just got my 05 TRX450R
#1
I bought the bike last Friday but they had to order it so I just picked it up today at two.
After my first ride for an hour and a half my first impression is that it's a great bike but 1st gear is way too tall.
My last quad was a 99 400ex with a pipe and air cleaner so this bike is a bit quicker. I do miss the electric start and I yearn for a reverse but it is what it is...
Looks like my first upgrades will be a 13 tooth front sprocket, wider handlebars, FMF exhaust and a Pro-Flow(Uni) air-filter (not that the bike needs more power but you can't ever have enough).
Am I missing any key upgrades?
Thanks,
Tom

Are you familiar with maintenance info???? Very frequent oil changes, and valve adjustments.......this isn't a 400EX! And, after break-in, I highly recommend Maxima Extra, ester synthetic oil. I am running it in both the engine and transmission sides. Run at least 100cc's of extra oil in the trans (but not the engine). Some folks run a full quart. (The dirt bikes are having tranny failure issues, related to lack of lubrication for 3 rd gear. Have not heard of any quad failures, but why take a chance???)
Lots of posts on all this stuff......do a thorough search!
From your list, you are missing an EHS Racing airbox lid (with Outerwears cover), nerf bars, a bumper, full chassis and swingarm skid plates. The stock tires aren't that great either. I am running ITP Holeshot XC's on ITP Baja rims.....great desert set up! It makes the quad several inches wider, for a nice increase in stability.
You know to rejet after your motor mods, right. The engine runs lean (and hot) in stock condition, so a rejet is a good thing to do real soon.

And, if you have 1.5 hours on it, it is past time for its first oil/filter change.....to get any metal shavings out of the engine. Change both engine and trans sides, before your next ride!
If you have been babying it, it may already be to late to break it in properly: http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm
My maximum oil change interval, is something like 5 hrs. That's just one long day ride, in the desert.

Congrats on the new quad. I have the same model and love it. I have wider Moose Racing handlebars, FMF Factory 4 exhaust, and rejetted it. Oh yea, and new tires, the stock one's really do suck. I'm gonna put the front tires on backwards, and have to do some drilling to get the bead out of the brakes way. Cheap way to make the front abouth 2 inches wider without spending any real $. Quick cheap fix for now, until I feel like spending more $. I got my exhaust and jetting kit for under $550, with free shipping. best deal I could find on that exhaust. Check out www.team11moto.com. They have pretty good deals. Enjoy the new quad.

Depending where you ride, you might want to keep there stock air filter on just because it's easy to suck crap through the K&N filters. Just a thought. I know a few buddies who had engine problems due to this. Maybe they just didn't take care of their machine properly. Just thought I'd throw that out there also.

I don't think he was intending to run a K&N. You can get a ProDesign adapter with either a foam filter (made by UNI), or a K&N. Take my advice........go with the foam, and you will be able to sleep better at night!
I have the ProDesign unit with foam filter on mine, and it is a great setup! DO NOT get the stock UNI filter. It comes with a plastic cage inside, and the plastic will eventually crush, and your filter will just pop off. Spend the extra money on the ProDesign aluminum adapter, and again, you will sleep better at night!

Thanks for the replies and advice guys.
I'm not too familiar with the maintenance other than what I have read in the last 5 days, my dealer said 20 hours before the first service than 100-200 hours but from what I have read on this forum it's a lot more frequent. I remember reading an article once about the number of engine failures that are related to too long between oil changes was XX% and the number of engine failures related to mistakes while changing the oil was substantially higher.... but that's another thread.
Re-jetting : I think I should be a bit rich since I'm at 4500 ft? After I install a pipe and air filter I should be just right?
Kick starting hot and cold procedures would be greatly appreciated.
Tires will be replaced but I have a few months to pay the bike off before I do that, as far as air filter it will be replaced to something that breathes better but not K&N (ok for my street bike but not dirt), I will look at the price difference between plastic and aluminum cages.
Yeah you can still get the 05's but not every dealer will get one for you, $1300 less that the 06 and and even higher for the 07.
