Engine mods vs. reliability

I would like to know what engine mods not to get if I don't want to sacrifice reliability. How do they rank(replace every 25 hrs, Every ride,etc) ? What would "safe" mods be? I want to build my quad up but I don't want to fry it or anything expensive like that. Throw 'em out.
