Bearclaws for Kodiak?
#1
I am ready to get rid of those crappy stock tires and get some new ones. I ride in all kinds of conditions: hard pack, coal hills, mud, and water. I was wondering how the bear claws perform. I know I don't want a true mud tire, like the Vampires. I ride too much other terrain for that aggressive of a tire. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have a set of maxxis sur tracs on my wolverine
and they are like the bear claws, but spaced wider apart,,,I haven't had any complaints, i just have to remember that they ar directional, I pulled in to a mud hole and tried to back out pulling a 2 wheel drive , and my tires balled up with mud, as soon as i turned it around i jerked him right out...

I bought 25" Bearclaws for my 00 Kodiak and they made quite a difference. Like you, I wanted a good all around tire and these are what I was looking for. The biggest difference I noticed was in the mud. When at first if they spin I stay on it for a little bit and they dig right in. On hard pack and trails they handle just as good as the OEM and I do not see any change in power do to the extra weight. I think the Maxis sur trac's would also be a good tire as well as they are very comparable.

I have them on my Xplorer and they are a godsend. They ride just as sporty as the stockers and kick a$$ in the mud. I had 26" tires on at first but got rid of them for stock size Bearclaws. Wow! All performance returned and traction is unbelievable.
Very good tire and not to expensive either.

I know tons of people who have bearclaws (including me) they work pretty good. I noticed that the 22" have a deeper tread than the 25". They are a pretty stiff tire but are a little heavy. My 300ex rarley ever gets stuck now i can go through more mud than any other 2x4 atv and i have prooved that. Now all i need is some more low end to pull them...... Well since my motor is shot i should get s piston and cam.

I love them on my Y2K Kodiak. Not mentioned above is the 4 ply rating. Also the compound is very tough. I ride on lots of hard packed crush & run gravel and they are holding up very well.
They are a little stifer than OE's but shock and psi experimenting will get you what you want. As with any tire, too soft up front will stiffen steering.
I don't want to hammer Sure Tracks, but the compound is softer.

I think that Bear Claws would be a good choice in a tire. My buddy has a Wolverine with bear claws. There about half worn and he still has no problem stay with me on my Kodiac with over sized mud tires. He just does a little more spinning (very little though). If they were new there would be no stopping his bike. Once my tires are worn out I'm probably going to get a set myself.
