Default 300 4trax

Hi to all I have a 1997 300 4trax and when I turn the engine off I hear a noise that sounds like something spinning very fast and coasting down. The sound seems to be coming from the kick starter area also the kick starter does not allways work, it feals as though it is trying to spin the engine and then just slips all the way down without spinning the engine over. Anybody else had similar problems? Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Would this cause a ticking sound while the engine is running or is that something else? (The valves check good) What kind of money would it take to fix 1. if I did it 2. If dealer did it

Yes, it could cause a ticking or a roaring or a bit of both.
If #3 is messed up then #2 is messed up too. So, you are looking at just over $200 for the parts and whatever your local shop is going to charge for labor. It's hard for anyone to tell over the net if that is your problem for sure so you may want to get someone to actually test it and listen to it in person.

I am pretty mechanically inclined and I have a manual. Is this a job a do it your selfer can handle or is it better left to a shop?

I purchased this atv 4 years ago knowing it made a ticking sound while running. I thought it might have been the valves but they checked good. Then I was told it may be the timing chain. Would the clutches yall have told me about be making a noise that sounded like the valves slapping? I hope to be able to work on it this weekend, planning on taking the side off and going from there. What should I be looking for in the kickstart/clutch area to know for sure what needs repairing?

Thanks for the help.

Sorry for all the questions, just trying to figure out what to look for when I open her up. I had a mechanic listen to the ticking and he said it was either the valver or the timming chain. I am trying to figure out whether or not I have more than one problem .

Thanx again!
