I have a 1985 Fourtrax 250 2wd it is making a clunking noise from somewhere towards the back of the machine, mostly when the rear wheels are in a bind or on a side hill. Anyway I think it could be the joint for the rear drive shaft. Any ideas on how to verify this or what is the best way to remove it. Any help is appreciated.

 

is it a rythmic noise, that gets faster as your speed increases? Or does the sound seem to follow the bouncing around of the rear end?

 

It is mostly only heard when turning and at low speeds and ususally in reverse.

 

yeah, but does the sound seem to go along with your speed, or is it a random clunking noise? If it's the u-joint, the knocking sound will increase as you go faster.
