What are your opinions on what one will do better in severe all terrain situations? My Friend seems to think that rear wheel drives can go all the places a 4x4 can go

 

Your freind is in dream world. The only people who say that 2x4 will go where 4x4 will go, are people who screwed up and bought 2x4 machines, and now wish they had spent the extra money. I know. I've been there.

I ride with people with 2wds and they go every where I go especially 2wds with aggressive back tires.I,m in 2wd mode 90% of the time and even when we come to some large mud run I have to go right down the middle to justify the 4wd and the 2wd guy just ride to the outside of it to get across.To me the 4wd is really handy in the deeper snow and for pulling things and pushing a plow.

 

Your friend obviously doesn't know the meaning of the word "severe". A 2x4 WILL NOT follow a 4x4 in those conditions. Period. Been there, done that.

Impossible......a 4 wheel drive will go when 2 wheel drive will not........its the law of physic's............bottom line

 

You friend needs to be reminded that strength is in numbers!!!

 

The other thing i forgot to mention is that he said....If Your as GOOD as him u dont need 4 wheel drive

 

Who needs 4 wheel drive?I've heard that about 50 times allready.It brings me to a time my friend Brian was on his 300ex,me on my Xplorer.Brain had to get off and PUSH his EX thru the serious mud about 5 times that afternoon,while I sat on my Xplorer and DROVE thru it.There are MANY more situations just like the above,but you get my point!

Absolutely NO comparison in the serious mud/snow when refering to 2wd vs 4wd.4wd will out perform a 2wd everytime in its own enviroment.Just facts there,

I to, used to have that grandiose opinion of my 4x4 in comparison to a 2WD.
I have ridden recently with some 2WD sport bikes. It blows me away where they can go! In real deep mud, or ruts they are at a disadvantage, without a doubt. But when it comes to scrambling up some pretty nasty hills they amaze me! However, I would still buy a 4x4. You can't use it if you don't have it, but if you have it, you can always turn it off(provided you have 2WD/4WD option)if you don't want or need it. If your only into mud bogging there is no comparison! Personally I ride in all kinds of terrain, hills, mud, rocks, trees, ruts, and rivers. For the most part, those 2WD bikes can go where I do, and they can do some of it easier than I can. The point I'm trying to make is, don't under estimate a 2WD, they will surprise you! Ever seen a baja bug go against a full size 4x4. Thats a good analogy, there are places the bug will go that a full size 4x4 will get hung up.

First off. It doesn't matter how good of a driver your friend may be. Given the right terrain he won't be going through in 2wd. I have a little story about 2 vs 4 wheel drive. About 1 month ago 2 friend and I went out 4 wheeling. 1 bike was a 400ex and the other Banchee, I have a 4x4 Kodiac. We went through mud/water/snow. I was breaking trail (about 5 inches of snow)and had to contantly turn back to push one of the other bikes. I never did so much pushing in my life and the sad part is that it wasn't even my bike I was pushing. So in my opinion 4x4 is without a doubt the better choice for an all around 4 wheeler. I may not be able to go really fast on the flat trails but I stay behind no problem.
