Default 05 Rubicon ?'s

I just bought a 05 Rubicon from a older man who didn't know anything about the 4-wheeler other than how to crank it and ride it around the farm. Anyway I have a few questions that I need help with

1. D1 and D2.....Which is best for pulling a 5x10 trailer and hauling stuff and which is best for just trail riding, or should I use the ESP

2. I have heard there is a pull rope on these and that if you get in deep water or you are in mud alot that you should buy a kit where stuff doesn't get in the pull start and mess up the motor.

3. When should I change the oil and does the radiator have to be serviced for the winter or will it be fine like it is???? As of now it only has 63 miles on it so when should I have it serviced....

These questions may sound stupid but if you don't kno you better ask, and I have not bought a 4-wheeler since 93 and it was a 300 fourtrax that still runs like a top....

thanks

Congratulations on the Rubicon. They are nice quads and I'm sure you will love it. D1 is designed to keep the engine in peak HP, while D2 keeps it in peak torque. Since peak HP comes at a higher RPM, generally, D1 will rev higher.

Honda says you should use D2 for low traction conditions and D1 for general use. But, if you are going to be towing, I would strongly suggest using low range. When you are in Low, it is automatically in D2 no matter what is selected.

I am not aware of a kit for the recoil starter. I have never had a problem with dirt or water getting in.

I don't remember what the manual says, but I changed my oil after the first 10 hours and had the valves adjusted after 100 hours. Since yours only has 63 miles on it, I doubt it has had any service. I think you ought to change the oil and adjust the valves now, just for piece of mind.

So far, I have not done anything with my radiator other than keep an eye on the level.

Change your oil after the first 100mi/20hrs., what ever come's first. Then every 500-600 miles, give or take. Each time you change the oil, make a check list to cover all the demand's of up keep, on the machine. Just in case you forget something. Depend's a little bit on the kind of riding you do, also.

You don't need that kit. just put some silicone in the holes where the rope goes in and I think there is a drain for it too. Just seal it up with the silicone to protect it. Then, if you ever need the pullstart, just give it a yank and then re-apply the silicone later.
