Default Yamaha grizzly reverse problem

I went riding on Saturday to the local hills and while I was loading up the grizz I realized the battery died. I had left the key in the ignition on.

Went riding and just jump started it and ran it. Anytime I would go in reverse it would hesitate and want to stall with what seemed to be backfire. When I put it in drive H or L or 4x4 it would work, run fine no problem only when I went in reverse.
Does anyone have a cle if it was the battery that caused this or the trans or ????? Thanks for any help.

Im pretty sure it had nothing to do with the battery. IS this four wheeler new to you? It should have an over ride switch that increases speed while in reverse. I believe it is on the left side of the handle bars. just push it while in reverse and you should go faster, and run correctly. The button is only a safety measure created by all manufactures.

What yr. is the Griz, the override button on the 04 is only for when you are in diff. lock.

Default Yamaha grizzly reverse problem

The grizzly is not new to me. I bought it 2 years ago and I have never had a problem with the reverse. I would just give it gas and it goes. after this weekend I give it gas and it sputters, goes really, really slow and it seems like it backfires. Not like it usually does when you give it gas. I was thinking maybe dirty carb, or if there is a different gas line for reverse clean it. I was just thinking. I ride the grizz really hard. I have ridden everywhere from Santa Barbara to San Felipe. I need to keep up with dirt bikes.

Sounds like you sucked something up one of the vacuum tubes... Check the tubes around your carb... Also check the gas cap vent hose, and possibly the cap itself for obstructions... It definately sounds like a breathing issue...

There is a reverse speed limiter and no over ride button. Over ride is for Diff lock only. If you resd the book it will tell you about this and at what speed the limiter kicks in. Good luck.

Default Same!!!

I pulled my 2013 450 out yesterday to get it running after 3 years of setting. Went through the carb yesterday performing a rebuild and general cleaning. Today I JUMPED IT OFF to run it and see if there was anything else that might need attention. When I put it into reverse it did the same thing you’ve described. I went as far as pulling the cover off of the trans and running it while the cover was off so I could observe. Everything worked as it should inside the transmission. I think you’re onto something with the battery issue. I’m going to the store to grab a new battery this afternoon. I’ll post my findings.
