1999 Yamaha Bear Tracker
#1
Hi this is my first post i bought a 99 bear tracker a few months ago, it was running fine till one day in the trail it started to sputter, backfire and lose power. So replaced the carb but then i couldnt get a spark so ordered a cdi as i was told that could be the problem, so the bike would not start at all, i was out trying a few things so i put the old cdi back on it, still nothing so i believe i read something about the ignition switch, i unhooked the ignition switch and pulled it over started rite away but still loses power at half throttle and sputters. When i plug the igniton switch back in while she is going it immediately dies any ideas on what steps i should take to rectify this problem would be greatly appreciated Thanks.

The CDI is independent of the battery system, so needs a kill wire to stop it sparking. This is wired through one half of the ignition switch and earths the kill wire when you turn ignition off. So, looks like the switch is faulty and is still earthing the kill wire when ignition is on. Make sure if it is the ignition switch, or kill switch, that is faulty, as it could be either, then get a new switch. Clean your old carb out. Remove and blow through jets and the holes they came from, with compressed air. Do not alter needle settings. Put it on bike, and see if mid range stutter has gone.
