04 700 Sport waterpump seal replace advise
#1
There is a very small amount of coolant coming from the weep hole on my 04 700 Sportsman. I assume it is the water pump shaft seal in the gear/stater housing that needs to be replaced. My question is:
Do I have to remover the stater and everything including the gear/stater housing to get this seal out and replace it or is there a way to replace it w/o removing this housing.

More than likely it is the mechanical seal - its a ceramic seal. Just double check that it is not coming from the waterpump cover and its seal.
It's been several years since I replaced the mechanical seal but I remember pulling the flywheel and maybe the pickup coils. If you have tinkered on ATVs/Motorcyles/Snowmobiles then it's easy. I think the whole job maybe took about 2 hours. And there is no other way to replace other than pulling off the plastic ignition cover, flywheel, etc. I took some digital pics way back - if you want to see them I can show you.

getting the pump(impellor) and seal out is pretty simple if you are decent with tools. The starter and stuff stay in. Just the floorboard and engine cover come off - get the parts book down loaded from polaris website, it makes repairs alot easier.

TrooperK, did you fix the water pump seal yourself? I'm having the same problem/question on my 04 and had the same questions you did. The shop manula doesn't really make it very clear on what all is involved. Anybody else?

Snowguy,
Oddly enough it just stopped leaking. It hasn't leaked a drop since I wrote this post. It could have been the cold weather but I've put about 1000 miles on it this summer and it's fine. I may however be replacing it this winter
